indexing is the processing of ranking your page for different keywords.
cache is simply a copy of your page.

indexing is the adding your site to google's database where caching is if you make any changes in your indexed page then some time google still displays old page because google has not cached your changes at that time ...

I am very much clear regarding indexing as explained here in this post. Can we say that the cache is a short term memory available at databases. Sometime we make some changes and the search engines take time to revise or update the cache.

Indexing is the permanent data base stored in Google for each page of your site and cache records are temporary.

The Google Bots visit your site and updated database. Through this meta tags <meta content='10 days' name='revisit'/> you request goolge bots to visit your website, even the crawling is depend upon the activity on your website. If you make any changes between this interval that one can't show on old cached,This is "Google's cache of http://........com/. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on 18 Jan 2011 11:59:01 GMT. The current page could have changed in the meantime"

    Hello

You can say cache is short term memory because it is updated every time as the new pages are being inserted. when we create microsites we always take care of cache.
