How do you approach other webmasters asking for links?

When you write to other webmasters, requesting for them to add links to your site, what do typically you say in your email or contact form message?

I'd be particularly curious if anyone wants to copy-and-paste any emails you've actually written, if anyone cares to share.

I don't have one, but my suggestion for a request email is to be short and clean.

Writing emails for LE is not very useful. Few webmasters reply.

Just make it short and clear, tell them what you need and what you will give to them

Send them email for link exchange request with the information of your website & the link where you place their links on your website

It does not have a high success rate but if they have PR and are related, then it is worth the time. Suggest offering them something in return; like a free blog post or something.

I also receive a lot of this too. However, I consider each request. If / when someone brings to my attention a high-quality website that I have not listed, such as a tea company, or a well-referenced health or scientific website, I will be eager to add a link. But I'm most interested in linking to sites that have higher standards than my own, or that offer a resource that my site does not offer and that would be relevant to my site's readers.

I also am very reluctant to sites that show any evidence of engaging in link exchanges. If someone offers me an "I'll link to you if and only if you link to me." and starts talking about their pagerank and traffic, I either ignore the email or send them a reply linking to google's policies on link schemes.

If I had to offer advice it would be: don't waste webmasters' time. Ask yourself: if you ran their site, would you want to link to your site without receiving anything in return? If the answer is no, don't email them.

Generally, when the answer is yes, I've had very good results (> 1/3rd of people actually adding links) in terms of people actually adding my site. The vast majority of links to my site, however, came from people I don't know and haven't had any contact with adding links on their own accord.

If you are getting bad results or few replies, you're probably wasting webmasters' time by asking them to add a link when the link would not enrich their site.

Make your website a unique, valuable resource. Then, only approach webmasters for whom adding a link would be highly relevant and would enrich their site. Look at sites that the other website links to. If the site doesn't link to other sites at all, don't waste your time. If the site only links to sites that are higher-quality (especially if they are all better-referenced or have more editorial integrity) than your site, then go back and focus on improving your site before contacting that webmaster.

there is no need to approach in fencey way. I mean they already know that why you want links just ask him your requirements about links and relevant business niche. Just need to focus on the quality of the links..

Really this is the simple way to friendly and successful deal with other webmasters. And don't think on more ideas of here and there.

I don't respond well to webmasters who are offering to give me something in exchange for a link. The best email, from my perspective, would be one that reads something like:

I run this website: mydomain, and I think the page myURL would be useful to link to from this page yourURL of your site.

That's all they need to say. If they're correct, and their page / site is valuable, and the link they've suggested would be useful and relevant, they've done me a service, by helping me to improve my site. I will quickly add the link, asking nothing in return, and I'll be grateful for their suggestion. But if I get the sense that they're asking something from me, asking me to give them something, I am not going to be interested no matter what they give me, because they're asking me to compromise the integrity of my site. And honestly? People whose websites aren't worth linking to rarely have anything useful to offer anyway.

I think it is important to take the time to find who to owner is. So you can write to whim on a more personal level.

Be wary of those whose website says to link to them and then send them an email and they'll link back to you - the few I've tried haven't and have had a free link until I've decided enough is enough and have deleted the link

I usually just ask them if they are interested in exchanging link with my sites. If they are interested, they would reply back with their link details. I'll add their link and then would mail link details of my sites. But most of the time you don't receive a reply from them.

    Cazort,

When I look for possible strong backlinks from authority sites in my niche I simply say something along the lines of:

    Hey, there ____

I was wondering If I could write a piece for your site. I think you'll like and if it's not what you want, you may feel free to keep it. All I ask is that you can reference that (backlink in name, or By Jason webmaster of __ etc. be creative) I wrote this piece. Thank you very much!

Although it only worked for me twice in the times I tried it, it was well worth the effort. You're gonna have to accept that people rarely open these messages so you have to make a good impression with your subject (that's probably where I failed and barely got my messages opened) and make them an offer they can't refuse.

Instead of just asking for a link offer them something to make them want to link to you. Maybe a free related item or an article.
