Hi, if I have a store which is located on www.example.com/store.php, is there any way to locate my store at http://store.example.com instead? Thanks
Yes. Provided your web hosting account allows you to create subdomains, simply create a subdomain called "store". It will automatically create a folder/directory in your root directory with the same name, and that is where you would upload all your store files. Vito
The stores full path will be: http://store.example.com/index.php Why do you want to change it ? you will not gain any PR from example.com since store.example.com will be treated like another domain not related to example.com
You're confusing individual files with folders/directories. When you create a subdomain in your hosting account, you are creating a folder of the same name in your site's root directory. It contains no files, and folders do not require extensions. It is then up to you to upload files to the new folder. For instance, you should upload an index file to the folder. It can be index.htm, index.html, index.php, whatever meets your needs. If you are installing some kind of pre-bought store script, and if it is in PHP, it will likely have an index.php. After you upload that file to your site, when you point your browser to http://store.example.com , it will point to that index file. Vito
I was hoping I would benefit from the PR of example.com. My situation is that I have a blog hosted on TypePad with the domain example.com. I want to host a store under the same domain so that I can associate the store with my blog. But TypePad is not exactly the ideal place to host an online store. So I bought hosting at HostGator.com, hoping that I could host my store there and use the domain name example.com/store.php. But the HostGator support team said I could not do that. They said I could only create a subdomain (store.example.com). But if the subdomain will not benefit from example.com's PR, then this is not going to work out for me. The only thing I can think of is switching from TypePad and transferring my blog to HostGator and use Wordpress instead, but this sounds like it would be an EXTREMELY tedious task. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I am not shure of what kind of setup you want. But what about fortgetting about the PR, purchasing a new domain, and put it on hostgator. Have your store on hostgator. Do the store need to have the name example.com in it ? I mean, if you expand, soon you will not like to be at a free host that owns your domain name.
What do you mean? I am not using a free host. I have a TypePad Pro account, and I've paid for hosting at HostGator. The reason I want to have my store at example.com is because I've already gotten indexed well by Google for example.com, and I want the store to benefit from that.
Thanks. So how do I go about directing my domain to this directory on another host, while still hosting my main blog at example.com on TypePad?
That you are well indexed will not automaticly help you to index new pages, it depends on the content of the new pages. If the store pages are just amazon goods info its likely that they will not be indexed or just in the supplemental at best. If this is something you will build for the future I would find a way to move everything to hostgator and use /store. Why cant you move the blog ?
