    hello DPyers
Can a higher PR play a major factor on a site's SERP position. If not, is there a big reason why I should burn midnight oil while serching for high PR backlinks to gain higher PR.

PR is debatable, but is it believed sites with a higher PR do indeed have a higher place in the SERP's.

pagerank is a lot. Can make a website worth a lot more. Will make you more money from ads if higher pagerank.

I have read many comments about PR only being of importance if you are going to sell links. Whilst IMHO this is partly true I would have thought that PR is valuable to SERPS in many ways - not just direct.

I have launched a site recently, it made PR2 very quickly and seems to have stayed at PR2 in the last Google dance (the site is new and I hope the PR reflects the very little SEO work I had done in the previous month! and not what I have done in the last month!).

I approached a site that we very 'niche' to my site about a link trade or even about buying links. I admitted that my site was new and that I was initially the one to benefit from any such trade but as we were NOT competitiors (all be we are after similar traffic) I thought it could be of benefit for both of us.

The site in question has high PR and is ranked very highly, there reply was (some might argue understandably, I certainly would argue against it) somewhat dismissive (although they did say call back later, you never know!) but atleast they replied.

Now my argument is, Google puts emphasis on good backlinks when determining your SERP, the higher the PR of these backlinks we are led to believe the better. So, if my site has a high PR, it is easier for me to build backlinks to my site because of my current PR. How often do we see here on DP posters offering link exchanges on High PR sites but only to other high PR sites? Its a bit like being back at school and if your mates with the most popular kid then everyone else whants to be your mate, but if you are the geek, no one wants to know you - certainly NOT the 'in crowd.'

Now, had I approached the site above with a higher PR site in the first instance, their reply may well have been different (hence the call back later comment), I know that a link from this site would have been very beneficial to my site and ultimatley to my SERP and PR - so I guess what I am also trying to say is that they all go hand in glove, all are important. A high PR in this case would have had a more + effect on my site and my ability to build links and therefore ultimately my SERP.

Seems like there are a lot of opinions about PageRank.

    ------------------------------------------
    To put it simply,
links from quality relevant pages + keyword rich anchor text = high rankings + Pagerank
    and not,
    Pagerank = high rankings
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Quoted this message from the link provided above. I can only say amen to it and have got it engraved in my heart forever.

You are exactly right Matt, I think this is a simple concept that is often overlooked. If you have a quality, well-optimized site, you are going to rank well. Additionally, this means that you are going to have a solid PR.

i think Link popularity is much more important than page rank , and that is what you should work for ... For example if a blog of PR5 links to you , your PR will be probably jump to PR5. But as that blog may have thousands of links like your site so it would not give you much traffic .

I think PR is an indication of of all these factors like link popularity, link relevance and quality, site crawlability, etc etc and is just a loose score based on these and assigned to a page
