Getting followers on Twitter is easy. Getting lots of followers is also easy, however it requires genuine work! I wanted a nice following just for skittles and giggles so I set out to do it and here is what I did... Following others. That's the way to get massive followers. The theory is that you follow someone and 9 out of 10 times they'll follow you back. Increase your chances of getting a follow back by targeting users by interest. What I did was get an autofollow program, navigate to the twitter profile surrounding my niche that has tons of followers (look for profiles with 5,000+ followers). For example, if I was promoting something music related, I might go to the twitter page of Britney Spears or another artist. Once you have chosen a profile with lots of followers, you simply go to their follower list and start the autofollow software. It automatically adds all those people, up to the max per day by twitter. Now, like I said this requires work and isn't an overnight process. Since twitter sets caps on adds per day, you have to repeat the process daily until desired follower count is reached. The key to all of this is to maintain a very active twitter account and always tweet a lot, possibly as much as possible...with GOOD real content, NOT ads, rss feeds, links, etc. You have to make a connection with the people following you in order to plant that seed of trust. No one is going to follow a spam bot. Post funny tweets, tweets about what's going on, pictures, etc. Stuff people actually wanna see. Think of it as a microblog. Unique original up to date content to keep your followers.
That process has worked well for me but I usually only get 10 to 20 % of the people to follow me back. TweetAdder is good software to use for what was described above.
You're right. I forgot to mention the flushing process. After a good week or so of adding/following people, I allow approx 2-3 days to allow people to follow me back. After that, I use a website that allows me to unfollow anyone that is not following me. Then repeat the following process above with the software. I stopped using twitter for several months and unfollowed everyone. I lost some followers but not a lot. Just checked and I have 5,909 followers currently. I had a good following with good click throughs so it's important to keep up on tweets as well as building relationships by tweeting with followers.
I agree with cgraydon it is really important to build up a strong and active profile in order to attract followers in this social networking site.
What particularly do you post about in regards to those following you so you don't come across as repetitive or tweeting to be heard? If I set up a tweeter account to specifically promote somebody else or specific company's product how than do I increase my followers without being tagged as a spammer?
Piggy Backing like that can help you stay inside your niche and is very effective in getting followers
