copy another webpage's keywords/meta tags? allowed or is it illegal?

Is it legal to copy a webpage's title, keywords or meta tags exactly word for word? Or is this considered intellectual property and not allowed to be copied?

I'm not sure it would be illegal but it won't help your website get decent SE rankings, although having the same keywords as other sites is common if you are in the same niche. I personally wouldn't copy others sites meta tags but make up up your own.

I wouldn't copy the title but copying the keywords would be fine.

it is again nothing more than duplicate content.

Even though having same products, having little different keywords would be fine.

However, i agree title must be unique,

    Regards,

Keywords are the only thing I would copy, but even then I would do some research and modify it to my site's focus.

No laws against copying keywords or meta tags (so far) but you may have a problem with the title. If a site uses some trademarked term for their title then you are advised not to.

    Just my 2¢. :)

Google wouldn't like it, they might see it as duplicate content.

If they are directly related to your website, why not? Just mix them up. Nothing wrong with what you're doing.

Yeah don't do it... it just shows you are un-original and it shows that you have no creativity. Just analyze your competitors keywords and make your own. Using someone elses keywords won't help you as that person had those keywords first and google already indexed that site with that keyword.

I'm sure the people who have been sued for doing so will love to disagree with you on that point.

Dan-can you think of (or even provide) references of instances where people were held responsible for copying meta tags?

You can copy the keyword and have an idea how your competitor used it. Then try to make a web page a little better. Do not copy meta tags word per word. It might get your site banned especially when someone or your competitor saw your meta tags looked the same, he/she might report you.

I want to see for sure if one of our competitors used our site name as a tag. We have been working hard to climb the ranks and suspect that they may have done this to ride our tails...

Copy their keywords but make sure you mix and match the order. Then add some of your own. Make sure that those keywords actually have value though by checking on their popularity. There's no use copying words that don't have traffic. Mainly, use their keywords as a springboard for your own ideas.
