Is link exchange dead?

Does link exchange still offers any benefit in terms of SEO. Is it useful to devote any time doing link exchange these days?

Depends, two ways really cancel itself out, if you do three or four ways maybe you've got a chance

What I have seen is that many people still do link exchange as part of their link development efforts but its difficult to know if link exchange is any helpful. People do it just because they don't want to leave this method from their list of things.

SEO is not yet definitely dead. And it will not.
Link Exchange still benefits SEO , but not like before i guess.

It depends really, depends upon who/what you're trying to link exchange.

If it's 2-way, 3-way, 4-way... I wouldn't say link exchange was dead, just becoming (imo) slightly more difficult to achieve without some leverage or a decent deal from both parties.

The more link exchanges you have, the less seo improvement will do. I am talking about 1 way link exchaneges. I haven't tried 2 way, 3 way...

I think you have a very interesting point here, google has almost kill link exchange, thinking that people will not do it to alter serp's but by killing link exchange they have actually promoted link buying which is more dangerous, link exchange on the other hand provided site owners a way to link to sites which they liked, and this is what makes web, THE WEB, coz if people won't link to each other, web wont be WEB.

link exchange is still good, but if its related and high quality, rathers its a waste and harm.

i think its a good way to show the search engines that your popularity is still in demand, at the same time the association of the website some how seems to matter. ...

Yes, 'the sky is falling, oh my'

    Link sales still go through.
But you've got to be discreet.

"3 way" ABC links within the same niche that look natural have a better chance of helping PR than random bulk links.

You also have to have a site with real content or a purpose for existence beyond being a place to place links.

Just concentrating on getting links will get you no where, fast.

Link exchanges still work but everyone you speak to qualifies that by saying not as well as they used to . And I think it is more a question of how long the other party is going to stick around rather than whether they still work or not. Established and successful sites don't, as a rule, exchange links. So it comes down to a question of who does and why. When I place a link I don't want to have to check it, let alone replace it six months down the road. That's the reason I don't bother with them

It's jut a pity that the web does not work the way it should. I read a post earlier this morning from a member who supports a forum that has just killed his signature links. That's the same ball breaker that's skewing the use of link exchanges as a legitimate networking tool.

Three way link exchange is still very effective if you are doing quality link exchange.

What is a quality three way link exchange? What I worry about is that the other party in the exchange doesn't know enough to avoid this method of link building or if they do they are so much more street wise and I get left holding the thin end of the wedge. How does one quantify quality?

There are few webmasters believe that LE is dead since it
doesn't help them to get the backlinks they needed. But for
me it still helps to generate traffic and backlinks. Why?
As long as you are doing the LE in a good way and following
the old rules I think it will still help. Check this out LE for your
    info. :)

What are the old rules? When does networking become link spam? What is natural? When does natural become link spam?

It leaves to be natural when you do it a lot, when you put links on webs that doesn't have any relationship with your kind of content.
