Creating a social network

    Hi

    I want to create my own social networking site but am not sure how to go about designing it.

    I have read about P2 for wordpress and BuddyPress and also had a look at JomSocial.

    Has anyone got experience and can offer some advice please?

    I can't offer you much in terms of technicalities. But as for design - I would recommend taking a look at the top 5 social media sites out there. Observe what they all do best, try to identify their weaknesses and fill those up when you go about creating your website.

    On the other hand. I wouldn't recommend going over the board, keep it simple at first else you'll make things cluttered.

    I'm sure someone better can offer help on WP and BP.

    wordpress with buddy press, will help you a lot, and its good for search engine as well.

    With facebook getting billions in venture funding from big companies, I dont think it would be right time to enter creating a social market. I am sure down the road, some big firm will come with totally new idea to break facebook market. ( Same as Iphone came out with smart phones and crashed traditional phone market)

    Dude, do something that is practical and provides benefit.

    No offence to you or your plan, but this is not even remotely practical to create your own social networking site and go head to head with giants like facebook, twitter (falls under a similar category) etc. You know how facebook took over the myspace market.

    Like all the others have said before me, unless you have a revolutionary plan, stick to something more realistic and attainable, and with time you will see some good results.

    Cheers guys..

    It was just an idea that was buzzing around and I wanted opinions on it.

    My idea was really to create a niche in the console and PC gaming environment because its something that I enjoy. I have a few sites out there about stuff I am not that bothered about other than they make me some money.

    I just wanted to try and get traffic then advertise and get paid in impressions but if you think the market is already overcrowded then I may focus on something else.
