When forum posting, are sig links enough or do you need to do in post links? I'm only really looking at top webmaster forums really.

Sig links are enough and if you will be in top webmaster forums and participate regularly you will surely get 8-10 backlinks which Google shows to your site in one month. I did it and got success on it. I started forum postings campaign for my client sites and got good backlinks.

Click on your name and go to Edit Signature. Most forums won't let you have a sig until you have had 10+ posts approved and been a member for 7+ days.

Signature links have a role. But in isolation their impact is quite limited.

It depends why you have them IMO. If you've joined a forum purely to market through your sig. links, then that will show in how you post, and it's pretty unlikely that many people will go through to your site. If, however, you are already part of a forum and an active member, then adding a relevant sig. link may bring a bit of extra traffic, and perhaps a few more loyal readers/customers. So as dburdon said, they're certainly an aspect of your online marketing approach, but are limited when used for purely commercial/marketing reasons.

I think links are a better way to go than SIGS. Links are more read - if you're me I just look at sigs and forget them. Links entice me to CLICK on them to find out more.

But that is not really the point of this post. The point of this post is not whether Forum Sig Links help gain traffic from forum members, it is whether they help to develop back links and therefore help SERPs.

If your signature links are live and you post regularly on forums it can really help boost for seo. I have found quite a lot of 'basic' sites that rank first page on Google for particular keywords and getting most of their backlinks from forum posts. So yeah SIGS really do help.

Well the answer to that is YES. Some of the popular forums do get listed in Google and at the same time if you carry on active discussion then you will find people who might end up posting the contents of your website on their personal blogs. So you're building links directly as well as indirectly.

did you change a signature and suddenly point 3000 links at a site? even that shouldn't hurt you but sometimes they can jump about a bit.
