Just curious. Using google keyword tool, it says Keyword "A" is searched 20k a month and Keyword "B" is searched 300k a month (local monthly searches). However, under competition it says Keyword A's bar is 7/10th full and Keyword B has only 2/10th full. Given that scenario which keyword would be easier to rank for?
The competition is referring to companies paying for adwords on those keywords, which is not necessarily directly correlated to the competition on ranking for a given keyword. Check the PR and backlinks for the top ten sites for both keywords. That is the only way to know.
It seems to be true. I pretty much just wrote 2 articles and submitted them and the keyword searched 300k times locally i was ranked about 100 and now i'm around 29. Seems pretty easy to rank for such a searched keyword.
Adwords competition is not always the best indicator for SEO competition. I would check the backlinks and on page SEO for the sites that are ranking on 1st page instead.
The second one is much more competitive, so your best bet is focus on the first option. But it really depends on your goal. 300k monthly searches are quite good, and the only want to get a good ranking for that keyword is to work hard on building quality links.
I tried checking backlinks and Pr and things of such. I noticed guys higher then me have a few hundred more back links however guys below me actually have something like 40K more links then me. So this doesn't make sense either. Any other ways to check ranking competition per keyword?
Keyword A will be easily and quickly ranked. It's have a minimum search rank. It means it will came soon in rank and easily.

which keyword has the less competition that will rank easily, doesn't matter search volume. if the competition is higher than it will take the long time to rank your keywords, so choose you keywords with less competition.
First of all you should decide which keyword is more important for your site. According to this data, you should go for keyword B as it has good search volume and less competition.
Backlinks and PR are useful indicators but they need to be put into context. Specifically how good is the onpage SEO for the competitor that keyword? Is the keyword in the title? The Url? The metatags? Are they using h1 tags etc? What is the keyword density? Any LSI words for the keyword? Context of article? Backlinks are the most important SEO work once you have done on page stuff - but it takes a huge number of backlinks to solve any problems caused by not doing on page SEO well. If the onpage SEO is bad (or more often, simply targeting a different keyword) then you could easily rank above it even if they have a high number of backlinks It is a science that you need time to get the hang of - and you need to take time to careful check your keywords if they are to be major keywords for you.
I think keywords A will easily and quickly promote because it have minimum local search in compare of B keyword.
I would put my money on the LOW competition'd keyword. The clicks combined can average more than a keyword with high competition.
