i have done little SEO before and am not a big expert.. all i have done before is link directory submissions and put my url and keyword in sigs on forums, post my links on forums etc... never got too deep into SEO.. so i was wondering if anybody could tell me what SEO stuff i could do.. for like beginners... stuff that can increase traffic, build good backlinks, etc.. i dont want to fall in google rankings so i want to get some work done.. what do you think?

You can do on-page optimization and off-page optimization, most people do off-page optimization to get backlinks, just find quality links to your site.
You can do onpage optimization first, you can use title tag,meta description,and alt attributes.then link your site with quality backlinks.submit your site in to forum,blog,article,social bookmarking sites etc.
i heard link submissions do hardly anything and i also heard from people that blogrolls or link exchanging can hurt you.... and forum posting, does that mean just put your links in your sig and post on the forum? like i have in mine now?
Well, are those websites in your signature yours? I can tell you some major problems you going to have with those websites. First off I'm not going to talk about the PR0 website. Since it won't be able to do good in Google for a while. However the PR3 website probably has alot more weight. 1. The first problem with this website is your garbage links. For example, the links on the right side bar ( Are you ready?! Football Betting with 888sport! Join NOW! Visit one of the webs oldest online slots review sites for a selection of free games. ) Those ones? Should be removed. 2. I would also remove your blog roll from the bottom. Even if they are recipricol links. The reason I make those two recommendations is that you want your pagerank to flow into your posts. That way your posts will get the Pagerank boost they need to show up at the top of search results. Of course, to get the best amount of traffic you would have to do some keyword research then write articles for those keywords.
Also make sure to use sites like Ping-O-Matic, as they are great in spreading your sites feed throughout the web
