    Hi,

I am trying to create my own google map similar to the one used here, but I need some kind of DB to convert the IP to a proper location.

Is there a, (free?), database that is up to date that I could use?

I could link to DP but I want to highlight my users and bots and so on.

So....where would I be able to find such a DB?

    Thanks

Nothing is free. Certainly at that granularity you won;t find an up to date free one. Go to IP2Location.com and see your options. MindMax.com has a free one but that won't tell you the exact location, just the country.

    Thanks, (again :)).

I am not really that bothered about the money, (really I am not).
But I don’t want to spend any money that will be wasted because my users don’t really like it that much.

In my blog hosting site I log all the IP addresses of every single visitor for each blog and blog entry.
If you are really bored you can have a look at the site statistics, http://www.journalhome.com/statistics.php, there is one for each user/entry.

So I could tell each of my users where their visitors came from.
But, there is no point in buying a database if there will only be a small need for it.

A small free database would be useful to get me started and if there is a need for it I would go for a commercial option.

You can recoup the investment by combining it with phpAdsNew and start serving highly targeted ads. UK Affiliate deals to UK visitors, US affiliate deals to US etc. rather than 'one-fits-all'. If you have a network of sites you can earn a $149 a year IP DB back in no time like that.

I have a question and don't mean to hijack your thread.

My ip here is 75.176.132.64 .

I do a lookup at www.dnsstuff.com and it gives location unknown where as www.IP2Location.com/free.asp gives me the exact location.

I only ask because an affiliate company I work with is serving me non-US offers based on my IP address being unknown (non-US they call it) when clearly this is not the case.

Is this just the databases for the geolocation tool they are using not being updated? It shows the regdate for my IP in august. Wouldn't these db's update every month?

Some databases are better than others. There are free ones but they are pretty poor. The big ones mentioned in this thread make you pay for updates to keep them accurate which is an indication of how much the data changes.

It would suprise me that a big affiliate company would use a database that isn't updated... I don't know.

Maxmind recently released more detailed info in their free database including some city info - I'm using it over here.

As T0P3O implies, your mileage may vary with a free database, so if this is important to 'ya, you might consider ante'ing up the big bucks for the pay one ...

Thanks, I was going to use their free data as a test but it doesn't look right for some data. It does not give an accurate LAT/LON address.

With the data given I can tell if a user is from the US, but not where in the US.
So I cannot stick 200 users in the middle of the US, i need to get a more accurate data :(.

I cannot develop using the free data as I am not sure that the comercial data scruct will be the same.

How many hits do you expect to get, how many queries? I may give you access to mine, I set it up with a nice WSDL web service.
