Are directories worth?

I have a doubt regarding submitting to directories. There are only a few directories including DMOZ and Yahoo directory that are worth. Most of the directories are nowdays Nofollow and still charge for a listing. Does their listing worth? Is anyone getting any traffic comming from directory listing?
Can anyone suggest some high PR Dofollow directories that are free?

From a ranking perspective, I've had very little success with directories. They're an outdated concept, to me they hold little more value than a social bookmark, which at least gives you anchor text.

You won't see any traffic from directories but I still like submitting to lots of free directories just to build up some extra backlinks. Even though they are low quality links, they all add up.

I'm in some directories that send me a few 100 visitors a day each. But they are niche ones, and some of them I didn't ask/pay to be added to, the owner simply added my sites as a resource.

Personally I wouldn't recommend submitting to directories. Most directories don't appove submissions and the webmasters are no where near to be found. However sometimes when I see a post on the forums about a directory I usually submit. Like the latest post I found was about a Pagerank 5 directory that had very few submissions. Of course I'll submit my website to that.

Submitting to random directories is probably not going to pay off in terms of return on time spent. Submitting to niche directories where you know visitors are going to be attracted to your product is the way to go.

There are still plenty of free directories, but most of the directories which will offer you the greatest value have operational expenses such as hosting, paid editors and programmers to pay which add the features you want. That's part of the reason why they require a review fee and the other part is to stop the inflow of spammy submissions. And with revenue, such directories are better able to promote their listings (including yours). Limiting yourself to "free" will prevent you from listing in some of the strongest directories around...

Directories are ONE of many ways to build links to your site. It is best to get into directories that are complimentary to your niche or locale.

It all depends on PR and number of submissions in a directory.

Pretty sure all those people who have negative things to say about directories have never submitted to one.

    Hi,

In my own experiences, directory submitting would not work as effective as it used to be but it is still be helpful in increasing the link popularity of your websites and pages.

    all the best,
