Dropped PR Domains with backlinks, Are they worth investing in to ?

I have always heard that dropped domains are not worth anything but recently I came across few dropped domains with PR2 and 3. Most of em don't have many backlinks but one domain with PR2 has over 2500 backlinks. what i am wondering is if that is something that can be used to any advantages ? any feedback or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Google supposedly monitors domain history, so when a domain is purchased after it is expired, then the backlinks are given less importance. If you can get them cheap enough, then they may be worth it purely for the backlink traffic. For SEO, though, the backlinks are probably irrelevant now.

Thanks for the reply. Well all it's gonna cost is the Reg fee. I understand that expired domains can lose there PR but as for the backlinks is there a such thing like getting less juice from em because the domain expired ?

You will get less link juice from them (if any) because they had expired. However, this is one of those "at Google's discretion" thing. So, it's only theoretical. I got a domain a while back. I was/am just planning to put up an infographic or something when I get around to it. But what I noticed was that I had gotten like 30 visits in a month. So, I checked into it and found that it had been a site about 3 years ago (a crappy one), and some guy on a MySpace-clone had it listed as his website. So, it was referring me some traffic. Not quality traffic probably. As for link juice, it's probably not getting any from anywhere before it had expired. But it's cheap to register a domain, so any backlinks should be worth the traffic. You can put up some ads, maybe make a couple bucks in a year doing nothing, so if you're going to do something with it, at least you got a $2 revenue to start from!

Dropped domains are not worth buying unless the original site is reinstated. They may receive some traffic from the old backlinks temporarily. Most of those backlinks will be removed if a dropped domain is redirected to another site or its content has been changed.

So in other words, even the backlinks on dropped domain are not worth the investment. are there any other uses of dropped domains. how about a PR4 or 5 domain with backlinks ? what if you were to redirect that to one of your low PR sites, would that be a benefit in any way ?

Thank you all for taking the time to reply, just trying to see if there is any use of High PR Dropped Domain at all ?

You can buy them to sell if the name itself has a value (i.e., generic and keyword names with some good search volumes). They lose PR, backlinks and traffic unless they are reinstated. Only the original owners can reinstate the original sites on their own dropped domains. Buy complete sites if PR is important for you. Google doesn't give much value to domain redirects even if a redirected domain keeps its backlinks for years.
