Announced Today: Facebook Claims Google Crown As Number 1 Website

Google has reigned for a long time now, but today it was announced that Facebook is the number one website in the world.

I'm sure Google will take this personal, and I'm surprised that they haven't tried a bit harder for a solution.

Imagine is Facebook partnered with Yahoo or Bing for searches? That could be the largest threat ever for Google.

Sony sells more TVs than Facebook and I'm sure Facebook doesn't take that personally. The two are in different markets and are totally different products.
Microsoft has a stake in Facebook but, iirc, if FB were to use Bing for search, there would be anti-trust issues and MS is in enough hot water all over the world with anti-trust problems.

Don't think you get it. The idea is advertising revenue, and those with the most traffic wins. If a business spends 5k a month on online ads, switching from Google to Facebook would hurt...especially if it happens fast. Remember, Google doesn't make any money from their organic searches..it's the PPC that pays their salaries.

Facebook aren't even close. They have a looong way to go if they wanna catch up to Google. Keep in mind that Facebook only has one domain.

If you compare facebook.com to Google.com, then maybe their close... But throw in all Google's ccTLD's and other services as well (like google.com.au, .co.nz, .co.jp, .co.uk, youtube, blogger, etc, etc) then you will realize how far facebook is behind.
For instance, top sites in the UK (according to Alexa) show google.co.uk at #1, Facebook at #2 Google.com at #3, and Youtube at #4.

Unfortunately most journalists/bloggers etc, don't like letting a few facts get in the way of a good story.

    Cheers

I still don't think you get the point. YouTube (for example) is owned by Google, and it never has generated a profit. What money is made is from Google Adwords. What I'm saying is, if companies decide to spend their budgets with Facebook (instead of Google) it will have a huge negative impact. My clients now spend about 25k a month on Google PPC. If they call us Monday and say "hey, let's take some of the cash and try Facebook Ads" it will be taking from Google's budget, Get what I'm saying?

Yeah, I see what your saying, and also, the more sites that report that facebook is bigger than Google the more chance there is of advertisers switching to facebbok ads...
All I'm saying is, take those reports with a grain of salt.

    Cheers

Not surprised at all, and you're right, if they did decide to join yahoo and bing, then it would mean big trouble for Google....

All the money in the word does not create a better search engine. Look at MSN/Bing.

Facebook is a social website and search capabilities are limited at the moment but who knows, things might change.

Even thought FB has become no. 1, Google is still one of the best places to advertise in terms
of internet marketing. But I'm seriously going to cash in on FaceBook!

It's great to see Google being knocked out of the number one spot. Monopolies are never good. The more competition (i know search and social networking isn't the same), the better for everyone, especially when it comes to online marketing.

Microsoft is still under US Federal oversight for their illegal activities. The EU watches them like a hawk. They've paid over $2 billion in fines. Yes, they still care about that.

Google is not a monopoly but, by your definition, this makes Facebook a monopoly. So now you should be wanting to take down Facebook.

I spent 5,500.00 this month on Google Adwords..I think I'll try a little Facebook advertising for my ads. So maybe I'll spend 4,000.00 on Google and 1,500 hundred on Facebook for January. I think this is the point being made

Not surprising that facebook could be the number but I don't think so that their partnerships with Yahoo and Bing is a great threat for Google.
