SEO contest - Is it worth a try?

I haven't participated any SEO contest yet, but I am very curious about it. If you have experienced the competition and how it went, can you share with us?

I once thought it was just a silly game, but the prizes are not really silly. How competitive are they? SEO contests are becoming more popular, you think?

Its worth doing just for the experience. Many people follow the contests to see how they are won but its hard to follow if you don't enter yourself.

Don't expect to win though. :)

Yes, I have seen some that joined to test their SEO knowledge. But then almost always the issue is simply the number of backlinks and (somewhat) the quality of links.

The contests are usually held for 3 to 4 months? So, IMO, I am not too sure about testing SEO skills as many claim so.

Is it possible to see any SEO result just in few months? If the contest lasts longer, then SEO makes more sense to me.

I fail to see any benefit to SEO constests other then polluting the already polluted net.

Are you saying SEO contest can pollute the Internet??

It's not like they are doing ilegal stuff. IMO, Dmoz is nowdays more harmful. And I am glad to see their PR dropped to 8.

I see SEO contests as research into what is currently working with the search engines. It's through investigative efforts like this that we can figure out whether or not Google likes invisible text, invisible links etc. A few hundred extra sites won't make a difference to the billions of scraped MFAs and blogs.

Agree with you WillB. Interesting that you said SEO contests could be a great contribution to webmasters to know SEO better.

I think this can be true. SEO contests can give opportunity for webmasters to test what SEO is white hat or black. And promoting white hat SEO can create better Internet environment, too.

I just entered my first one and found it a lot of fun. Learning from reading forums or articles great, but tweaking a site and seeing the results change with the competition expanded my understanding. My biggest complaint? It takes too much time.

Oh, I wish I knew. Does anyone have info on a new SEO contest? or even a list of SEO contests. That would be awesome.

If you have enough time on your hands, it's a great channel to generate leads to potential SEO work (of course if you land respectable finish).

The ambatchdotcom seocontest ends on the 20th of October, so it's a bit late to enter. Here's the official website: http://www.worldseochampionship.ambatch.com.

I've entered. Here's my entry ambatchdotcom seocontest. I'm currently coming 3rd. I agree that one downside is that it takes a very long time, and really takes it out of you. But then again, over the past 3 months, I've been able to put theory into action to see what works and what doesn't for me. :) Others may disagree, but I've learnt a lot from the competition, so I'm happy.

Snoopsta what do you think about competitors. Are they one of the best SEoptimitzators in the world or just average ones.

I really am not too sure about "skills" in seo. It's just a matter of knowledge, rather.

And most of the SEO work they do is just a matter of how many back-links they can get. I think they should do in Yahoo! instead of Google to see real skills :) so it would be more on-page SEO rather than simple link exchange stuff. Just be careful not to be placed in sandbox.

But then this could be one of the reasons I would like to challenge if I think I have enough time; thus the reason for opening this thread :D

It's nice analyzing how the top sites succeeded in ranking high, but as far as time is concerned , I think it's better to spend it striving to rank higher in your niche , as it will please you more than participating in a contest :) .
