advice for new site.

Discussion in 'AdSense' started by tarkus, Oct 10, 2006.

hey guys, i have been thinking of opening my own site for a while now, and i am very knowledgable when it comes to graphics and gfx software, i am also great at putting together clean documents etc.. so i though about making a site with free graphics tutorials. my first idea was to do screen capture video with audio. but this would ultimately create bandwidth issues due to filesize. so now i am thinking about making something like www.tutorialized.com where the tutorials are just links that open tutorials created by others, and also have some of my own .pdf tutorials thrown in there.

So if i can create a website like this, but with a much larger databse than the competitors offer, and a better site, easier navigation, discussion forums, etc.. would this be a site that would generate a decent amount of profit from adsense or other means of advertising? on average how many hits and unique hits would be ideal to earn something like $50.00 a day with this type of site? or at least a 5 figure anualy income from the site.

thanks guys, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will get vague answers because cost per click on subjects vary substantially. For example, it is common for an entrtainment site to have 5 cents a click while a mortgage site might get more in the region of $1 a click. Also, you have to consider the click through rate, of course.

It depends on the subject. And rates changes frequently. And u may give a better service than other sites, but the other sites might be popular already. First u need get more traffic. I think u should get at least few thousands of uniques daily to get the amount that u r expecting.

alright, well i am not expecting more than a CTR of 7% and i am probably aiming for ~20,000 daily page impressions. and i would be happy with an average EPC of $0.10

Is this a possibily? and how hard would it be to get ~20,000 daily page impressions. i am working with a budjet of $2,000.00 to get the site started (not including site creation and hosting).

    Thanks again guys.

Sounds like a plan. If you have the enthusiasm for the subject and are willing to put in a lot of work into I can't see why it wouldn't work.

It'd probably take up to half a year for you to start seeing any proper results though and it's really easy to give up within that time which is where the enthusiasm thing comes in handy!

I'm afraid Adsense wouldn't work well for you. Assuming your main keyword will be "free graphic tutorials", do a Google search on that keyword and you'll see that there are no paid ads on the right side of the page. This means Google has no inventory for that keyword or phrase. Even if they did have some inventory, the keyword would not be competitive and the revenue per click would be dismal.

If this is a topic that you are passionate about, by all means do the site. You may find a way to monitize it later. But don't do it just for the money because you'll probably be discouraged early and quit.

    Good luck.

if it wont make any profit, then i dont think i will do the site. the main reason why i am wanting to make a website is to make some money with adsense or advertising, or even selling products, etc.. whatever it takes..

so, seeing as how that isnt a good topic as far as adsense is concerned, then ill be looking for something else to make a website on. i just thought that would be good because it was something im interested in, is there anything else you guys can recommend for me?

thanks agian for the replies, you guys are very helpfull

Just think of topics that interest you (so it won't seem like work), that would attract a reasonable amount of traffic (the key to making money) and a high percentage of non-repeat visitors (repeat visitors get ad-blind), is not a forum or blog (difficult to make money with), and a topic for which Google has good ad inventory (test it by doing a simple Google search and look for paid ads).

    thanks for the quick replies.
Most of my interests lie in these categories:

    3D graphics (modeling/rendering)
    Music (metal/hard rock)
    Web design/development (css/dreamweaver/php)
    Computer tech (software/hardware)

All of these topics have good sponsors/paid ads on google search. But there are many huge websites for these topics, it would be extremely difficult to compete with these big websites.

Is it better to have a site that is a more braod view on the subject, or more narrowed down to a certain area, like instead of software, have a site on operating systems. and instead of music, have a site of heavy metal, and instead of web design, have a site on php/mysql, etc...

You guys have been a great help, thanks again for the quick responces.

It's best to narrow it down as much as possible to start with. Well that's not strictly true as the area must have an audience!

Instead of just focusing on heavy metal you could increase your chances of succeeding by focusing on say 80s heavy metal bands or HM bands from a certain part of the world.

A narrow niche topic is best for getting a quick start. A broad topic with lots of competition requires time, patience, persistence, and much hard work.

is it a good idea to make something like an advanced software directory. showing top applications and industry standards for every category and descriptions, etc.. kinda like a search directory geared towards software/programs. is this a good idea? would this kind of thing have a decent EPC and receive a fair amount of visitors?

    cheers. :)

tutorials are a tough niche. You need to devote a ton of time and advertise to get people there. Try doing a search on your tutorial subject. You'll see a slew of sites years older than yours. Without a budget to advertise, it'll take you years to seep through the SE SERPs.

be careful of mentioning your proposed website name for someone might beat you to it.

note: generally these kind of sites should better put ads at the end of tutorials because the visitor may not leave the site before the end of tutorial.

I have a graphics related site and your EPC of .1 is pretty realistic. With tutorial sites, a lot of times users a looking to fill a very specific need and may not generate many page views. So for 20K impressions, you will probably need 10k or more unique visitors.
