I don't understand how speed has any relation to use of an anti-virus software? Do you mean your running on an older PC?

I use Avast and have been for many years, have never had any issues with it and it offers boot-time scans to scan your PC before it boots into Windows and before the virus can be loaded into memory. It's frequently updated, and I'm using the free edition, and as far as I know is fairly light on resources.

I am using McAfee's free version. It is strong and it does't consume large chunk of memory and hence does not down the speed of your processor.
