Over 1000 people are killed every year by their own families in India for the dishonor of marrying outside their caste. With all the focus on Muslims because of recent terror attacks, it seems we have turned a blind eye to the practice of pure evil in India based on shared economic values.

Though the honor killings are shocking, they hardly tell the whole story. Those born into lower castes or outside the caste system altogether suffer unimaginable violence at the hands of the remainder of Indian society.

The stories go on and on and on and on. It amazes me that, in this day and age, India remains one of the few places on the planet where apartheid is still institutionalized as part of the culture.

It seems the world has so many problems to be concerned about these days, but when you consider that nearly 15% of the entire population of India lives in slave like conditions, it really calls into question why America's foreign policy doesn't seem to reflect our core values in our dealings with India. Slavery has been gone from the US for more than a century. South Africa ended Apartheid more than a decade ago, yet India continues to live in denial they even have a problem.

Shocking, but apartheid is not really used in the correct context in this instance, real apartheid is like the South African apartheid or current Israeli apartheid.

When they are still killing members of their own family at a rate of 1000 per year for marrying outside their caste, you know they are a long long way from reaching the kind of equality we have in America. Can you imagine the outrage of Americans if we had even 100 such honor killings a year for blacks marrying whites? There would be riots in the streets. The same is true for any civilized western society I suspect. Why are we tolerating this behavior from people who supposedly share our values? I suspect most Americans are not even aware of the activity. I think if we raised awareness of the problem, it would help encourage the Indian government to put in stiffer penalties for those who still promote and benefit from this type of behavior. Something must be done.

The UN Human rights council has taken up the issue, like they did RWanda, which I suppose means they will continue to focus on Palestine. In September 1992, Thomas Kozak, Martin Ricciardi, and Mark Evangelista were brought to trial on federal civil rights charges in connection with the attack on Saran. However, the three were acquitted of the charges in two separate trials in 1993. Saran testified at both trials that he could not remember the incident

A number of perpetrators have been brought to trial for these assaults. Although tougher anti-hate crime laws were passed by the New Jersey legislature in 1990, the attacks continued, with 58 cases of hate crimes against Indians in New Jersey reported in 1991.[1]

Its surprising that all this happens in US even in this century.

Even though US doesn't record honor killings done by Americans (we just had this racist Jose Carrion say that Muslims and Indians in America are not American) still media coverage recorded 6 in 2010, multiply it by 3 and it would come to 18 if the population was 1 billion and imagine how many go unrecorded. I'm guessing it'd be close to hundred which is equal to the number of recorded killings in Europe but yet we see No riots in the streets as my hateful friend said should happen in "civilized" societies.

We are yet to see any proof of the honor killings in India being more than 100, I guess he looked for it but didn't find any that fit his propaganda.
