How many keywords to use

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by socialmedia0987, Oct 3, 2010.

Hello, I have just begun a campaign on Google using their adwords system.

How many keywords is a good amount to start with, as they are suggesting 30+

I believe that in order to keep my visitors specific i need to narrow it down.

    Any help would be great,

    Thanks :)

Use as many keywords that describe the product. It's not a question of how many keywords, it's the quality of the keywords.

Do group them logically. Don't put all your widget and thingamabob keywords in one group. You'll have a Wood Widgets group and a Plastic Widgets group as well as a Wood Thingamabobs and Plastic Thingamabobs group. In the Wood Widgets you might have the following keywords:

    wood widget
    wood widgets
    wooden widget
    wooden widgets
    widgets made of wood

Some people may use timber instead of wood. You may or may not want the "timber widget" keywords in a separate group. You'll also have these keywords in the different match types as well so you may have many more keywords in this group than the plastic one.

Maybe people search on the type of wood or maybe the type of wood makes a difference. Therefore, you'd have groups like Cedar Wood Widgets and Maple Wood Widgets. Of course, granularizing like this means you have less keywords in each group. But the total of all your keywords in all groups could be in the hundreds or even thousands.

Asking how many keywords to use is like asking how much gas to put in your tank. Well, how far do you want to go?

You can use as many keywords as you want as long as you tightly group them accordingly to your adgroup. For example if you are selling hockey equipment you wouldn't want to have all hockey keywords into one adgroup. You want to separate each keywords into its own adgroup. So you would want one adgorup about hockey gloves and have keywords like easton hockey gloves, ccm hockey gloves etc. Hope that helps. Good Luck!!

If you are new to Adwords, my suggestion is that you start with a small number of keywords until you are comfortable with how they are performing and build up from there.

Some folks will launch too many keywords and end up having trouble tracking them all. It also depends in part on how much time you can devote to managing them. Managing 1,000 keywords takes a lot more time than managing 30.

I start with as many as possible, even 1000 or more, and then start and drill down and get rid of all the non converting, to the point where I am left with about 20 pure money making one.

I like your way! I've been trying to find an answer to the same question and, after a certain period of trial and error I came to the same conclusion.

You may like it but it is best to start with the keywords that best describe your product. This usually won't be thousands of keywords, maybe just a few. Then, if need be, drill up. It will be a lot less work than drilling down.
