    3. stay as far away from phpBB as you can - if you don't want to purchase vBulletin, there are other far better options than phpBB (try SMF, for example)

MyBB & vB are equal to me.
    phpBB is the worst.

    For free, go with MyBB.
If you want to pay, go with vB.

phpBB is a good piece of community software if you're doing a forum for your close friends and family and you don't care about the every-week-if-not-daily security updates. For everything else, there's vbulletin. I personally love every bit of it.

vBulletin is best, phpBB can be good with ALOT of mods... though doing so makes upgrading versions a major pain.

    365,000,000 for phpBB

376,000,000 for vbulletin results in google but. phpBB is more social.

Mdvaldosta, the more mods you have with phpBB, the greaters the chances are of your board getting defaced by someone. I've had a real bad experience with phpBB though it wasn't too late to migrate towards Vbulletin.

What do you mean by social, Dark?

I have used phpBB2 and would never use it again. It took ages to get it up to par with a LOT of hand-coding and mod application (remember, each time you add a 'mod' the code base changes so any automated tool eventually cannot find the lines it's expecting because you've changed them...so you have to hand-code the stuff)

And then yet ANOTHER major security hole with it pops up...and you have to do it all over again AFTER upgrading. NOT GOOD.

vBulletin is well received and people are beginning to 'expect' that look, though I have seen other forums which look better and have equal or better functionality (XennoBB i.e. punBB + mods, PHP-Fusion with FusionExtreme mod) plus those two give you CMS functionality.

SMF is also a solid choice.

vBulletin! although it's paid software, the community and work put into it is way and above phpBB.

Agree! I had a phpbb forum that got hacked twice.. also it really hogs the memory of your server..best would be to go for VB or if looking for free go for mybb..I am using this on one of my project site and have started liking it.
