SMF Forum on dedicated server

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by mypalsonline, Oct 9, 2006.

I am currently hosting an SMF forum on shared hosting. I need to move it dedicated server due to increasing traffic. I purchased a dedicated hosting package and they have currently installed only CentOS 4.4 OS and webadmin on the server. I'm new to this whole dedicated hosting thing. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how to proceed with the installation of services to install the forum software?

Dude you sound like you need a managed service. How much traffic are we talking? I think a managed VPS would have been a better option.

A good managed VPS would get the job done IMO. Let the host worry about everything :)

I have sites hosted on PowerVPS and KnownHost, which both have VPS plans. Both hosts have fantastic support and uptime. If you do happen to signup, I wouldn't mind the referal ;)

I am on the VPS XLtx plan with KnownHost. They say you should have at least 256Mb min RAM for Cpanel.

Which control panel would you use? If Cpanel, I would go with at least my plan. Works out to be $45 p/m with cPanel/WHM. Of course, you could host alot more sites then just that site, and you would have 2 different IP's.

VPS are waste of money in my opinion. Just go for a cheap dedicated server. :)
I can hook you up with a nice one for like $50 per month.

I don't call 100% uptime and fantastic support a waste of money, but each to their own.
