Last time I also used Ubuntu for ripping mms streams and converting video just from the commandline, sometimes it can be very handy Check out this website http://distrowatch.com/ if you are interested in Linux. Keep in mind that there are tons of Linux distributions. Some Linux may just s*ck for you, but you can always try some other Linux OS. Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Sabayan, Gentoo and OpenSuse are some of the popluar distros
No Adobe software runs on Ubuntu unless it runs through wine and excepting flash and pdf. And a lot of Linux software doesn't run on Windows. Virtually ALL professional software runs on *nix. Maya was exclusively *nix when it first came out and all compositing software. As was everything Pixar and LucasFilms used then and now. If you go to Hollywood, you'll see software running on *nix, BSD and Macs everywhere (and Mac's OSX is Unix). To repeat, professionals use *nix and Macs EXCLUSIVELY. Windows is the odd man in the video world. How do I know? I was there and my son is in that world now. As a web developer, I prefer *nix because it makes everything else easier. I do keep an old Windows box around just for IE testing but we do NOTHING else with it. *nix runs the internet. It's more than fine. Oh, please. Is that the best comparisons you can make? Simple photo editing?! Almost everything Photoshop can do, The Gimp can do!
Windows is for conformists -- ahem... I mean people -- who aren't really that great at computers. With linux you can do almost anything, but you have to roll up your sleeves and open up the terminal (Command prompt for you windows users) and do it. There's all the software you need -- ubuntu has a well categorized software center and there's also WINE -- you just can't use the stuff you normally use (although there are exceptions). Ubuntu has google chrome for browsing, netbeans for coding, empathy for IMing, Open Office for papers/presentations, and GIMP for photo editing. What, honestly, more do you need? The average computer user doesn't need all that much. Someone already wrote all the important stuff for ubuntu. Also Ubuntu is a lot more stable than windows. Windows throws you a ton of error (ranging from the good ol blue screen to viruses) and runs slow.I have used windows 7 and XP before and they are both miles behind ubuntu in speed. Ubuntu even works on computers that could never dream of running XP, for fear of overheating and lag. A professional web developer? A lot of "web developers" don't know what they're doing. Just checking.
I was talking about Free open source Linux NOT Unix! Mac OS is an exception in unix/bsd world. Of course there are tools like Wine, crossover, cedega etc to run Windows software. But still it is a pain to install Windows applications with these tools. Try to install the whole Adobe Master Collection in Wine. How much time will it take to let it work without errors? Of course you can always run things virtual, but that is lame. Try to run a heavy application or a high end game virtual....I wish you success Also there is a difference in developer and designer. Don't mix them up! Also as a developer it really depends on what kinda language you use. Sometimes Windows is a better testing environment, sometimes the other way round. I think it is no use talking to fanboys. I use both Linux and Windows. I'm even part of the Dutch Ubuntu artwork and events team. I just want to talk about the facts....
for me: Linux is a lot easier than Windows. (I have Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7) I guess it depends on what world you are working on. I myself is not designer, so I do not need any of Adobe product. I also not a gamer.
As was I! You claimed there are no professional video software on Linux, only Windows and i'm stating the fact there is no professional video software on Windows and everything used in Hollywood is based on Linux, Unix and BSD. At one time I worked for CBS, Pixar and Silicon Graphics. I kind of know my way around.
there are plenty of them actually.. i think openshot is one of them and some non linear such as cinelera
I already know those. Openshot crashes all the time on my computer. And somehow I wasn't really satisfied with Cinelera.
OK but those software aren't available for us right? They are custom made and only used in those companies/organisations right? Well, if this is what you mean...than there is professional video editing software, but not for most home users!
tsss..... very lame answer. Also why can't people use professional software on home computers? If they work at home and not for a company or whatever...it doesn't mean they don't have the professional skills to use advanced applications. In fact a lot of people work at home, for hobby or job.
Didn't say they couldn't. I said it's not for them. A hobbyist can't afford professional software. The best they can do is Final Cut Pro but, last I recall, that was still something over a thousand dollars. Avid is on Windows now but I don't know if Discreet ever ported Inferno or Flint and all that over. Those were $10K+ last I heard, used everywhere and ran only on *nix. Then there were effects software like Shake and Cineon and on and on, all *nix software.
theres something you probably forgot to configure because it don't crash in my computer which only have 256 of RAM. try to know its dependencies. and there are spins or derivative for certain function of a computer. say, if youre an artist what you need is ubuntustudio or if you prefer fedora then try thier spin for artist.
Ah I see. So what do you recommend me as an alternative to: for example Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas on a Ubuntu Linux machine? You mentioned Final Cut Pro, but that is a typical software made for Apple Mac ...Unix. A video editing software that doesn't require Wine or look a like applications and I don't have to run virtually on a Linux machine? I would appreciate it, cuz Openshot, Kdenlive and many others lack a lot of features I used to use in video editing software made for Windows.
Yeah I gave Openshot a lot of chances in the past and sure it isn't the most advanced video editing tool, but for a simple video for Youtube it would be good enough. I installed from the first beta versions to one of the latest versions. Somehow everytime it didn't run, because I installed other software like kdenlive or somehow it installed but just crashes while editing video. Ubuntu Studio, I know already that distro
I lol'd at Windows is for conformists. I think its more of Mac's are for conformist. Example: My fat lazy friend who isnt in school but decided he needed a $2500 Mac Book for.....surfing the web? Mac is def. taking the title of "for conformists". Windows is awesome. If you aren't a moron you wont get a virus. It has TONS of programs. Sure Ubuntu has "free" alternatives but I see it like this, nothing in life is free. You get what you "pay" for. Some of those "free alternative" softwares arent bad at all, I admit. But they're very few, and they still dont have ALL the bells and whistles a payed for program do. I mean if you seriously NEED some of those types of software (video editing, web, etc) then its wise to shell out an investment into a full fledged and well known program that will do what you want. I am running a dual boot W7/Ubuntu and every now and then I'll start with Ubuntu just to play around. Yea it loads up fast, it seems to run faster, blah blah. But I don't mind. I'm not HATING against Ubuntu seeing as how I like to futz around with it every now and then, but as a main OS? Nah...
So people who buy $2500 Windows computers just to surf the web are not? All operating systems have tons of programs. You only use a few of those. It's the bells and whistles you're paying for that suck you in. Most of the time people buy Photoshop because...well...uh...aren't you supposed to? Yet Gimp does everything most people need. My company uses Gimp for everything, and we even own Photoshop! As I said, Windows is for the average joe. For professional computer work, you need *nix or BSD. Another good example, the internet runs on *nix.
