Thinking about launching a travel related directory. Have the name but .com has already gone. What would be the best option? .net .info .org
i think best option will be again .com ... user some alternative domain name if your favorite one is gone ... Reason is simple ... for example if someone ask you whats name of your site ? and you say my site is Africatrails , it automatically means your website is africatrails.com .. .com is easy to remember and you may get more mouth publicity .
Sure, but the name is a spin on a very well known domain in the travel industry and too good to miss out on. Ok so there is a slight risk of losing the domain to the .com but it is worth the risk!! So, .net .info .org?
.net is good for tech websites , and your is travel ? so u should not have it . .org is for non profit organisations , and you are going to do business (earn by ads or directly) . so not again .info is only option left for you if you are going to make travel website . Cheers
.info is only good for cheap sites. Making a good site and placing it on a .info domain name is like pimping out the inside of car with flat screen TV's, tablet PCs, and custom leather seats... when the outside of the car is a rusty 1983 Pacer.
I think that as of April 2005 the .travel TLD name has been avaliable. I think it would go well with the kind of site that you want. You should check it out.
I don't understand that mentality. Is this something that only internet savvy webmasters think about or is Joe Average gonna avoid a site because it has .info? I still believe .com and .net are the only two things the average person would think of when it comes to these things. Also, are there actual rules to which one can be used? If I make money from a .org will the internet police bust me or what?
I won't even consider .info. If .net and .org r available register both and use one for website and redirect second one to main site.
I think the best will be .com as it looks like a proffesional name but .info willor .org will you give the advantage of good ranking insearch engines like googlw for the particular keyword that has the same name as your domain
If you are saying that .net or .info cannot get good ranking, I may not agree with you...It all depends on the way you promote your site... BTW, in this case, .com is already taken [if you haven't read the posts nicely], that why he wants to chose a .net or something.....
Thanks for the reply. I dont think it is any harder to get ranked with a .net .org .info etc I think the problem is that people dont see them ranked too often because .com or country specific are chose first and simply appear to rank higher because there are more of them to see. Unfortunately xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx.com has gone but is not used!! Think it has been snapped up by the organisation who owns the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com along with .
If you want your business to go global, I recommend you to have a .com address no matter what. Most people from outside of U.S. are only familiar with either: 1. .com or 2. .co.THEIR_COUNTRY_CODE (for example. .co.it , .co.kr, .co.fr , .co.de ...)
Coming from outside the US I have to disagree with that very broad statement!! We arent all from the dark ages outside of the US you know!
Arcos, I'm sorry for the generalization. By the way, where do you live? I guess I made the mistake by judging from my experience only. Still, I think it is true for lots of asian countries.
I'd prefer a .org if .com is gone especially for a travel related site. Yes, there's no harm if you profit from a .org domain.
If you list your full domain name (example.com, example.com.au, example.co.whatever) you will not have that problem. BTW you don't need the com/net/org/info part, you can just use a country code.
.net is good option if u not able to get the .com name or either u can go for a local domain as specified above or look for a different phase with the main keyword.
