World is getting more corrupt, says transparency poll

The world is considered a more corrupt place now than it was three years ago, a poll suggests.

Some 56% of people interviewed by Transparency International said their country had become more corrupt. The organisation put Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iraq and India in the most corrupt category, followed by China, Russia and much of the Middle East.

Meanwhile, a BBC poll suggests that corruption is the world's most talked about problem. About one in five of those polled by the BBC said they had discussed issues relating to corruption with others in the last month, making it the most talked about concern ahead of climate change, poverty, unemployment and rising food and energy costs.
In the Transparency International survey, political parties were regarded as the most corrupt institutions, and 50% of people believed their government was ineffective at tackling the problem.

One in four of those polled said they had paid a bribe in the past year - the police being the most common recipient. Some 29% of bribes went to the police, 20% to registry and permit officials, and 14% to members of the judiciary.

Political parties have long been regarded as the most corrupt institutions - they topped the list in Transparency's 2004 barometer with 71%. In this year's report, 80% regarded them as corrupt.

Why am I not surprised that my country is included in both Poverty and Corruption? Oh yeah, nothing much has changed even with our new president. T_T

Sad to say that what you've said happens in our place thus, the bad economical state of our country. And corruption isn't rising here, it has already been rampant like for 5 decades now.

Unfortunately to cure corruption you need two four vital things : a good minimum wage so no one would actually need to take bribes to put food on the table , harsh anti-corruption law , a special justice department that prosecutes only those who take big bribes (politicians , judges , police chiefs , etc.) and at least 4 decades when all of the previous conditions where in place and working .

desperate times need desperate measures and seems the corruption is the desperate measure most of them are leaning towards to

    where r u from ?

anywayz, I am not surprised at all to see India taking top honors in the corruption list. Thanks to the scams starting from CWG to the latest Adarsh , y not forget the 2G or the another scam un-folding in TN and the worst of the media scam.

I begin to wonder at times, if in some god's name all the corrupt money gets into the govt banks and gets used for people how would be the world

That's only because the BBC is too polite to list all of the pork barrel projects and union kickbacks done in Washington D.C. in the last couple of years. :p

Obama's fake "stimulus" package alone probably exceeds the value of all bribes paid in India in the last two years.

That's probably true Will, in monetary terms the kickbacks would be much higher in the US. But the daily corruption faced by the average citizens of the mentioned countries is profoundly vast. If there is a government department in India, you know you can get things done faster by paying a bribe. For example, getting a driving license...or escaping a fine/punishment for a traffic violation. On top of that we're hearing of scam after scam, including the biggest scam to hit India. Sucks

Man... that's crazy. There are two things you can't trust government with -- money and power.

The Philippines. A country with lots of potentials. Unfortunately, our government kills that potential away.

One of my family members use corruption to win business and such, even though it's illegal in my country. He uses his own time to buy clients of the company they work for golf clubs (he's expected to by the company, whatever it takes to close down contacts), take them golfing and buy them other gifts to secure new contracts. Some people are out to win at all costs and to be truthful everyone is, I've still yet to meet someone who wouldn't screw someone over to get ahead. Nobody wants to be the loser in life.

OFC Seqqa but it's not normal to bribe the docs in ER to get attention , or to threaten the police chief whit a media blitz in order to get him to do his fking job .

Because they get paid fuck all to do as much as possible, it's like the slave trade. Most of these people first priority is to feed their families, sometimes at the expense taking bribes off hard nosed criminals which would rarther they just keep looking the other way. It's like Mexico when the drug cartels are paying you more than the authorities to the police just to do nothing but keep quite and look the other way. When you have all the money you have all the power too.

In case you didn't noticed I said ER docs . No one forced them to be ER docs . You think that when a ambulance rings you whit your collar bone half out and in a fukload of pain they'd give you some fuking attention .

People are corrupt in general. I've never met someone who hasn't been corrupt with something. Even if it's cheating on a test in high school people will do anything at times. Sometimes it's to get ahead other times it's the rush.

    True!

Hehe, guess they included Iran when they mentioned 'Middle East'

You must be either really corrupt or too honest to be true to have an overall red reputation

Unless you haven't got any health insurance. Ask any American, first question is 'do you have insurance?'. Here, they fix you up first and ask that later.

Not true. Heck, I showed up unconscious at a U.S. hospital with one collapsed lung, one snapped off shoulder blade, one ruptured kidney, and a ruptured liver. Luckily the liver was the only non-redundant part that was damaged, and livers are good at healing. My insurance paperwork was lost and I wasn't conscious to give them my insurance information verbally. And yet here I am... all fixed up.

Was there a loved one with you? Maybe they asked them and the answer was yes so they continued.
