Hello, I think you can take criticism, so what have you done? You tried your best to put adsense out of the way, so that your users can enjoy your content without being bothered by the ads?
If that's your idea of a good ad placement, then I cannot advice you anything unless you are willing to change your mind in order to increase your earnings.

Have a look at the adsense heat map (google it) and you'll see that the best spots are: top, left, integrated within content.

No, it's just that the audience is highly technical, so it will be always complicated or very difficult (I don't want to say impossible, but..) to have a good/correct CTR.
For me a CTR of 5% is what I aim for, a minimum before I can stop optimizing my ad placement.
That's why I tend to do sites for a general, non technical audience, they click more than technical audience.
But you can't do anything about it, you have this website and want to make money out of it.
So your ad placement needs to be as optimized as you can, and after study your adsense stats and keep on modifying and analysing the stats, you should keep a log of changes and stats for the next few weeks.

My suggestion is place the ads on the right side panel.

Ads placement is good but I think ads will work well if you put it within the content itself.
