Sounds like an easy way out to say that...

Winning the lottery is possible....not likely!
    Becoming President is possible....not likely!
an ugly guy getting a hot chick is possible...not likely!
Will I have a SUCCESS DP Forum? Its surely possible, but not likely!

I know this is not what some of you want to hear, but I know for a fact that people start their forum
with instant expectations...foruming is very competitive, across all markets....I am just being
realistic when I know others are not...this is why people setup forums, and within months they are gone.

If you are looking for instant cash, instant gratification, then setting up a forum is not for you, there is nothing instant about it.

I guess I wasn't talking specifically about webmaster or marketing forums.
I was going to use the small business analogy but someone beat me to it. (eg 90%, they said 95% failing)
But not everybody wants to own a webmaster or marketing forum, and not everyone who opens a coffee shop wants it to be bigger and more popular than Starbucks.
I think it is a question of vision and meeting your expectations.
The internet is a crowded marketplace.
Not everyone has grandiose visions of being the next Zuckerberg.
I think 'mathblogger' put it well when he/she said nothing can grow exponentially to infinity.

What is the oldest business that anyone can think of in the real world that is still around?

Nobody is talking about instant cash and instant gratification.

If that were the case why would people in the 'how much do you make online forum' tell you unashamedly that they make a very humble amount after being around for years and years online?

Maybe it is an alternative lifestyle.

Maybe it is a creative outlet for some.

Maybe they enjoy what they do, even though they could be making more money elsewhere. (at what price?)

    "Maybe"..."it is possible"

Anythings possible if you try. Dont give up and build quality links with more relevant content than your competitor site has and you will be on the right track to success.

Seeing that quality can be expensive, it is pretty much out of anyones control the type of backlinking they get (if you buy quality backlinks) because
when you do start to gather backlinks, you just do not have a lot of control on who is linking to you. So would be good to say, the higher quality
your content, then the higher quality backlinks you get? Because basically anyone can be linking back to you...so maybe I am at a loss when
you say "build quality" backlinks, as one would not always have control, and as your site moves up, of course you get more backlinks, but
who is to really say they will be good or bad backlinks, to be honest, it would be either way, good, bad, or even both...

Very true, but to be fair it doesn't matter if they are good or bad, bad back links are better than no back links.

You say, just fill your website with more relevant content than your competitors, but take DP as the example again, it is pretty hard to start a forum and add more content than DP, with 1000,s of new posts every day, you need to be more realistic, target the smaller forums and overtake them, slowly build up with slightly higher goals each time.

*this whole debate has inspired me to write a blogpost about the subject :)
If you want to check it out, my blog is in my sig

for sure, since most backlinking is normally out of our control, then any backlink is certainly better then getting no backlinks...

I think all new forums, or those that have started a new forum can tell you what a struggle it is to get content on your forum.
I get a signup here and there, and sometimes someone may surprise me and make a post then vanish, and I try
to post some content myself by making 2-3 posts day, its hard talking to the wind when no one is online to read :)
I wish I could add 1000's of posts daily to my forum, but that is just wishful thinking...try to overtake one forum at a time :)

I think I was wrong when I posted that DP has 1m backlinks...its more like 4m and at least 750m indexed pages...(almost 1billion)

What do you mean by keywords? I am sure a forum this size can not control keywords as
this forum does get 1000's of posts/day, so please explain more what you mean by keywords....

Lets get back to the basic question for a sec. I do some regular SEO for some sites, and the I do some BH for some of my other sites. I am currently conducting an experiment tackling this very question. I know for a fact that a site that's 2 months old can and did beat out a site that was up since 2005. I really can't publish the proof without outing myself but its completely do-able.

Also, this experiment calls into question the myths about what info Google really looks at for indexing.

It has raised questions about how Google handles:
    Site age
    # Backlinks
    Duplicate content
Multiple sites on the same IP

    So far my findings are:
New site is on same IP with 32 other active domains in the same niche.
New site was indexed with 3 backlinks. Site now has 886 backlinks listed in Site Explorer. All but maybe 10 links were bought, all in the same blast. Older site has 8,258 backlinks
New site was copied mid October from an existing site which has been active since 2005. Google is giving the newer site preference over the older site in rankings.
New site now has over 45 long tail keyword page 1 rankings older site has 10

Draw your own conclusions but the data speaks for itself.

Just because a site was up since 2005 does not mean it was active...anyone could have wheeled right past the site...
there are probably billions of sites online that are inert or not active, no traffic, no updated content, so it would be easy to pass any of them...

I am not much aware . But I personally feel.that age itself does not count. If you are new even, have that much number of backlinks, similar trend of visitors and regularly updating the content, there should not be any problem in even overtaking the old established site, which has become stagnant.

    Pick your fights wisely.
If I don't have a great and unique idea, which will give me much more value than the competition, then of course you will not win from your competition if they are really strong.

Your focus is totally on the wrong thing.
What value do you actually offer? If you don't have anything that will give you a great advantage over dp. Then why try to beat them?
Your goal is to have the best marketing forum in the world?

Why do you think people use programs like nichefinde etc.?
Because if you don't have something amazing to offer which will put you head and shoulders above the competition. Then don't try to beat the giants.
Find another niche where you can offer more, or the competition is not ridiculously strong.

It's like me starting to practice sprinting now, and expect to beat Usain Bolt.
He has more experience? Even if we started at the same time. Usain Bolt is the youngest world junior championships gold medalist at the age of 16.
    He's just better.
    Google just was better.

But that doesn't mean nobody will come and be better and beat them.
You can be that in your niche. But don't foolishly pick a niche and say you want to be the best there. Be realistic.
What you don't have in experience and time compared to the competition, you should make up for. I do that in working harder, smarter and by trying to give more value than the competition.

Pretty amazing thing you got here. Checked your site to get more info (just to save you some "irritation") but still have some lingering questions for you regarding your service.

    1) Does the service include all the keywords on my website or is there a limit?
    2) To get my backlinks I do a Google search for my keyword, then I look up the top 20 pages and use Yahoo SiteExplorer to see all the backlinks then send e-mails to those sites. I'm curious to know how does your company go about getting these 10,000 backlinks?
    3) Are the page rankings sustained? Meaning if after 2 or more months will my page still be up in the top ranks?
    4) My site is on nutrition (antioxidants, specifically). Is that a niche you guys work with?

Well...just my 2cents here, but just because you forum cant beat dp or wf, so just because you are not good enough to beat their competition, you cant say that beating them is impossible.
First of all when you talk about a forum, you talk about users registered there and users who are active and can give you as many post as there are here daily which bring you tons of free traffic, and let your forum being known so people talk about it in their blogs/websites and give you free/natural backlinks.
Im a SEO and I can tell you that some of my moneymaker websites which are basically blogs with articles and amazon/adsense are on google first page and killed some websites 10+ years old with no problem. Is never only the age or only the backlinks or only the domain name or only the content...its all combined together.
Sure not all the websites/keywords are the same so you may need to put more efforts and you may require more time in some than in others, but dont come here and say that is impossible, because tons of people out there are making good money from relatively new websites.
As a guy said Google is better than Yahoo, but also Facebook boosted all the other social network and the key is all in marketing, bigger is your project bigger are your marketing needs...but still...just my 2 cents
