Content is king... Make sure that your site does not have any duplicate content. That includes; duplicate content w/in your own internal pages or copying content from an outside source. It is wrong, unethical and Google will penalize you for it. Write original, interesting, resourceful content and Google will reward you for it.

Do you know if switching few words in the article will cause Google to treat the copied article as original?

Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.

You should educate yourself before spreading false statements...if what you said was true, then 90% of the internet would be penalized for duplicate content...
News feeds, RSS, Syndication sites, not all duplicate content is wrong or unethical. The content that you take without permission is wrong and unethical....
Most of the internet runs on duplicate content, google may not give you credit as they would for original content, but it is unlikely google will penalize unless
your site is doing something that it is not supposed to be doing...If you think google actually penalizes for duplicate content, then please provide a google
link that says this, as I would like to take their content and place it on my site...this is how content gets around, and how backlinks are gotten.
would it be good and helpful to use duplicate content all the time? no it would not, but google is not going to kill you, so if you are building
a site/forum, then it would be ok to start with duplicate content, but you also want to add as much quality/original content as you can....

Syndicate carefully: If you syndicate your content on other sites, Google will always show the version they think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you'd prefer. However, it is helpful to ensure that each site on which your content is syndicated includes a link back to your original article.

It's always good to write your own content. By doing so, you can target your keywords without having the fear to be shoved down the search results. Google doesn't want to display duplicate results on their search page and they must be spending a great deal amount of time to identify which ones are copied and which ones are the original.

Google has been waging war against all kinds of search engine spam and especially against duplicate content in all forms. There are two main types of duplicate content that Google is concerned about.

The rules about duplicate content online are not really cut and dried. Although a lot of people have been saying that Google will penalize a site for duplicate content, there is really no concrete evidence of this and even Google administrators will not say how they go about it. So, if you are a marketer and you know that plagiarism or posting duplicate content is wrong, then don't do it. Be as unique as possible when it comes to your articles. Although you cannot ensure that this will really be the case as there will be the same ideas as yours online, at least you were being honest with yourself and with your target audience.

Agree that content is king and original content means some new information for users of google which google like most. But at some extent dscurlock is right that content will be counted duplicated of illegal if you use it without permission. If you use same article or content for making blogs or article may be google will not banned you. Search this query in google how many results you are getting: "Freebie Startup Listia Now Helps Businesses Hold Give-Aways" (with double quotes). This query search in google shows 56,200 results it means the article is duplicated for many times but then also the main site is not banned yet also it is top site in its keywords and theme.

    Thanks

I am agree with dscurlock here. I think 90% of the wide spread content out there is either duplicated, rewrites or re-spinning. We wouldn't have know whether the content is original or not if the copywriter do some great job on the rewriting articles. I don't mean rewriting by software but rewriting that done manually by real human.

And also if we put somebody else's articles on our site that we got from let's say article directory, I don't see it as stealing if we putting original written content by the author with their links still attach in it, am I right?

If you site your articles and other content, it's obviously OKAY! I was clearly talking about plagiarism... It is NOT considered plagiarism if you put the original author's link or some how give them credit for their content.

I do not think Google penalize for duplicate content. I think they just do not give credit for the duplicate content.

I don't want to bore anyone with the details, but remember this: Always watch what Google is indexing on your site; some of the pages could come up as duplicates if you're not careful.

You can check to see if your website has duplicate content by running your link into Copy Scape. www.copyscape.com. But yes google will penalize limit credit towards any site with duplicated content.
