Remember it's not just about getting backlinks.. It's about the quality of those backlinks. Firstly use a webtool which easily highlights if backlinks are 'do follow'. Then whenever you create a backlink you need to ensure that it is indexed. There is no point wasting time getting backlinks from pages which are rarely indexed. I find the best method is to write good articles, submit them to high PR article site (Do a google search) and them social bookmark the articles once they are approved. This gives you high PR links from a trusted source with good relevant onpage content which will be indexed super fast. What more can you ask for??
