I have a couple of questions hopefully someone will be able to assist me. 1. I have a wordpress blog. I have added 28 private blog posts and my question is whether they will be picked up by the search engines if they are private posts. 2. These blog post were written for web optimisation. The reason I put them as private post is that I did not want my current readership to see these, while at the same time, get them socially bookmarked. My social bookmark guys tell me they can not bookmark private posts. Is there any way around these challenges or do you have other suggestions how I can use these blog posts? Regards Jo
Hi there, 1.I never had a private post, so not sure about the indexing stuff. But for sure, if you use Thesis theme, you have an option to tick "noindex" on the specific post, means search engines won't pick the post. If you use another theme which does not support this "noindex" feature for the post, you can exclude in "XML sitemap" settings by typing the post ID. OR if you put these private posts in a specific category, exclude the whole category too. 2. About social bookmarked, this is reasonable that they can't bookmark the private posts, even w3c can't access them too, probably wp membership plugin will be the solution (also not sure )
In the box next to the post box, which labeled "publish" in the right sidebar of admin page, you will see "edit" link, click that, you will option "set to private".
You can make your homepage to display other page, and select other page to display wordpress posts. In that way your homepage won't show posts but they can be indexed by search engines and bookmarked by your friends.
Go to Settings->Reading, there you can set what you homepage will display. You homepage is the first page your visitors see. You can define any page you want. After this you can select other page ( you have already created ) that will display your blog posts.

Sorry, I should have been clearer with my challenges. I am happy to post these 28 articles as public posts and if one of my reader sees them, this will not bother me. You Can easily Post as private by default these are public.......when u go for publish a post .there is an option for public and private ...u can select a radio button for that .........and easily select post public or private
Still http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-hide-post/ may do it. I know there are some plugins that can do this if this one can't.
