Comparing to Dreamweaver & Co, a simple text editor is the simplest software, that's for sure. Not sure about "easy and fast", though. I don't usually use big web development apps, actually.

There will be a learning curve on any piece of software you decide to use, you can't expect to just be able to throw an awesome site together in a few days without having a few headaches with your program and your site.

That said, I personally use Dreamweaver but that doesn't mean there aren't better ones out there. If you want it done fast and cheap, apart from hiring a designer, my advice would be to find a good web template online that you like, and buy it, and use a free HTML editor or even notepad to add your contents to it. If you are willing to spend some money you might try purchasing Dreamweaver, but if your only going to make this one site, then it probably won't be worth the cost.

How much experience do you have with HTML and CSS? And what sort of budget are you on with this site? You might check out Page Breeze if you want to go for free software, you can edit a template in here no problem, and you should get a template for under about $30.

I think Dreamweaver and Photoshop are best but very expensive, if you want a free alternatives try GIMP and Aptana both are available free online.

I use Aptana Studio, which is free. However if you want something that requires no coding at all, then DreamWeaver is your best bet, in my opinion. I used DW for years, until I learned how to code myself.

Dreamweaver is expensive but some people use a naughty way of getting it for free that is not recommended

notepad++ . There are lots of good text editors out there. WYSIWYG software creates lousy code

If you pretty serious about developing a few sites and not just a one off then Dreamweaver / Photoshop are both good pieces of kit. You have access to some great resources on both and there are a ton of video tutorials and extensive help on both pieces of software.

If you can already code then a standard text editor can be used instead of a WYSIWYG editor

Visual Studio Express edition is FREE and is 10 x the design software that Dreamweaver is. I know because after using DW for years and fighting with it for years I finally bit the bullet and learned to use VS. Best move I ever made. VS rocks plus it is designed from the ground up to support ASP and MS SQL (express). It has its own web server that runs locally so you can see your work without the need of a live web server. It has built in the ability to view your pages in Netscape or different versions of I.E. Also validates your code as you type against W3C standards. Hands down the best web design software you will find.

And you can get hundreds of hours of video tutorials at www.asp.net.

It's just crazy to spend any money on Dreamweaver

Notepad++ - free and has everything u need.
Or just install a free CMS system like Joomla or e107. And build a template. ;)

There is no best software for building a site. They all have their faults and advantages.

All you really need is a text editor (Notepad on Windows), a browser and a graphics program.

Learning to code by hand first will help you understand what your chosen HTML editor does well and what it does in correctly (bloated coding, non standards compliant). You can learn basic HTML and CSS at w3schools. (w3schools.com).

There is a lot more that goes into building a website than what software you use. You need to plan what you want it to contain before you can look at software to accomplish this. Some software is better suited for different jobs.

    My personal tools of choice:

For larger sites that I expect to use as a business, I use Site Build It. I have two sites that have done extremely well since 2006 and I'm a huge fan.

For medium-size websites on down to landing pages, I use XSitePro 2. I've also used this for a couple years and have found it's really great for turning out quality sites in a short amount of time.

Oh great. Another stirring rendition of this thread repeated all over the web and here on DP for the bazillionth time. Will this one last for two years or three? Let's see what the next guy has to say. (Probably "I use Dreamweaver. It's teh best!")

I echo same as "drhowarddrfine", DP is full of similar useless threads and posts and it's never ending. Also, is there a need of "dreamcrap" to build a website, waste of spending $$$ for the license.

You can also install Wordpress on your server and just find a WP theme for your site. This way you don't need to use any software.

    I love these responses..... lol...

Ummm no software? What do you think Wordpress is?... And like any tool, just because it's free or has a hefty price tag, doesn't mean you'll know how to use it properly or comprehend what to do with it...
