Does google prefer shorter titles compared to longer ones?

    example:

    1. Surf Images - Alex Knost
(then i would go into more detail on the description)

    or

    2. Surf Images - Alex Knost Surfing Stock Photography
(then i would go into more detail on the description)

This is referring to my pages at http://www.surfimages.com/surfers.aspx

Google has no preference as to the length of your sitle, however, they do favour a title that has your targeted keyword (keyword relevant title)

Also, Google will display up to 67 characters in the search results, so you should take full advantage of that.

The same thing applies for the description... it should be keyword relevant and Google will display up to 154 characters

    Cheers,

There is no restriction, but do not misuse your title. Keep it in an acceptable length. Include your keywords but don't stuff them and keep the title interesting.

thanks for the feedback, so say i have a hundred surfers names, google is not going to frown upon haveing a 100 titles that read:
Surf Images - "Surfers Name" Surfing Stock Photography
Surf Images - Alex Knost Surfing Stock Photography
Surf Images - Aaron Rice Surfing Stock Photography
    etc, etc, etc, etc,

I would try to randomize the titles a little bit otherwise it looks spammy. Writing a script and using a few synonyms will get the job done.

You can have a title of your choice. But make it short and sweet, from SEO point of view, it has to be less than 10 words.

On that note you may want to take out some of your title words, you have 20.

Make use of the characters available to you. Make sure the content is relevant to the page, words that are not relevant are just as bad as no content at all

The title tag should be aprox 60 characters, and include at least one of your keywords, and be relevant to the page of that title, as this is the text that's displayed first in search results.

I've run tests that have shown that Google at LEAST recognizes and uses keywords found more than 300 characters out in the <title> element for ranking. My guess is that they ALWAYS use the entire title for ranking. I would never create such a title for a production site, but it was an interesting test.

Google will show the first 65-67 characters in the SERPs...

It,s does not matter, Google prefer shorter or longer title.
Google read only first 68 to 72 words in the title tag according SEO parameter and use 6-10 words in the title.

Title is not about Google it is all about the surfer..
as title shows the very first information that is to be seen by the surfer.so more attractive and relevant the title more is the traffic and more the Google values the site......

It is upto you to choose long tail or short tail keywords, but long tail keywords get faster ranking in SE than short ones.
