worldbookfair.net hits all the right bases. Hyphenated domains are only marginaly better. Google can easily pull individual words out of an all one word domain. Save the hyphens for file names.

In your case a hyphen may harm you. Some searchers will be searching for "bookfair" others for "book fair". Using a hyphen may limit you from tageting those who type "bookfair".

And you get the benefit of it looking better for users, even though you are not concerned about this.

If it were up to me I would buy worldbookfair.net, I guess. I got a hyphened domain once and it didn't quite work out the way I'd hoped.

I usually only go with hypens if I have to. Since domains are cheap, why not get both? World-book-fair.net for the engines and worldbookfair.net so you don't have to tell people to check out world dash book dash fair dot net.

With that example, I'd also pick up the "fare" versions for people that spell it that way instaead of "fair." Then, just have all of them 301 redirect to the one you want the engines to focus on.

What? I've never seen any indication that Google prefers one TLD over the other.

For what it's worth, here's my advice: Buy both world-book-fair.net and worldbookfair.net and redirect with a 301 from worldbookfair.net to world-book-fair.net. This allows you to give the non-hyphen URL out to folks to find you easily, while still retaining the slightly more SEO-friendly URL, world-book-fair.net, on which to build the actual site.

My first choice, though, would be to snag a .com address instead of any of the alternatives, if at all possible, even if it means changing the domain name slightly. Like it or not, people tend to assume that websites end with .com and tend to go there first, even though they hear the .net extension.

Go for worldbookfair.net, looks a lot better and shouldn't make much of a large difference in SEO.

He said you can't use it in domains. You might have an underscore in your URL, but domains can only have letters, numbers and hyphens.

But as far as the URL goes, Google treats a hyphen as a space... and an underscore as an underscore.

Sorry to say these statements are just plain wrong. Google indexes on keywords in hyphenated urls but not on keywords in underscored or conjoined urls.

You can see this and also how Yahoo and MSN handle urls in these two posts; Keywords in urls & URLs (Update)

    Hope that helps.

the search engines can read the difference in a url, an image or page name (or whatever similar) it can't from my experience.

For the URL, aim more for userbility (non-hyphenated), for bots, there's next to no difference between hyphenated and non in a search engines eye(s)

I'm not aware of any penalty for hyphenated domains.

    I don't understand why...

    All domain names work fine...
Its only just that some domains with dashes are more commonly used by spammers... that does not leave Search Engines to a conclusion that all dashed domains are spam

This is a no-sense affair to me... Any domain works fine... Only Onsite and Offsite optimization is what is required...
