How do you build your list?

I have tried many things to build my list (I send them my newsletter). What worked best was a popup, but I stopped using it because I received a lot of complaints as well. Now, I'm only using a subscriber form in the sidebar... it doesn't work very well (but I get a few subscribers every day).

I would really appreciate if you tell me what you are doing to build your list.

    Thanks.

I started building my list on ebay. Using the classifieds, but its only effective on the .com, not any others. And yes, $9.95 to advertise there for 30 days.

Using the same squeeze page, i went onto using classified ads on numerous sites, such as backpage and craigslist.

But, the best result i get is from twitter.

Ebay nets me roughly, 300 a week, same as backpage and craigslist. Thats combined.
Twitter, around the 1300 a week, now i have a lot of followers.

Depends on what your blog is all about. If its about IM or IM related you could do ad swaps or get involved whit giveaway events. Should build your list, dependent of the trust of the list swapper and the size of your list. I have a list of 700+ so if you would like to do a swap PM with your mail address and get one planned.

I couldn't do ad swaps, i have been on people lists that do. And i wasn't impressed on how they go about it. If i were to do ad swaps, then i would only do one, once a fortnight - if that!

Well, i usually explain it for my list subscribers, but seeing that this is a forum - really i should share my experiences.

And seeing you asked nicely, i will share some.

Well, to get followers, i usually search for what people are talking about using summize(dot)com.

Follow them and their followers, as well as posting interesting info, like videos from you tube that people would like, whether it be your own or other peoples. Or even blogs, etc.

Now, the trick is, only follow 200 within any 24 hrs. Do that until you get to the maximum that twitter allows you to add. Leave it for a week, then unfollow everyone not following you. But, the thing is, if you posted revelent and interesting things, then you shouldn't get to the max twitter allows you because at least 80% of people should follow you back.

    This is just a glimpse.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks a lot. I'm almost using the same technique.

But how do you get subscribers to your list from Twitter? Do you promote your newsletter with tweets?

Exactly that, but not in the sales kinda way. Put something like, say you were promoting your new squeeze page on for example - Starting your own business online. Put something like this: Wondering on how to start your own online business (link here).

Hope that helps. Tracking is a must though, because say set it all up and you get 2 subs for every 100? There is something wrong with your squeeze page, if that is the case.

My problem is that I haven't been using a squeeze page, I receive a lot of visitors from Twitter to my blog... but it doesn't help much when it comes to my newsletter :)

I understand if someone only builds his here list trough swaps that would be a messy list. That is why I like to make use of different type of list building. Will try yours also. Thanks for the great tips you shared over here.

Oh and if you schedule your swaps in the right way, like don't do more than 2 a month than is won't hurt your list. Of course you need to know that the ad is compelling to your audience.

I was recommended to use a squeeze page and I found it very good advice. Double-opt in cuts out all hassles.

Very true, smile633. I wouldn't understand why anyone would use single opt-ins. More trouble than its worth.

To get the more followers on the twitter, I have heard from various persons used some software, but I never trusted on that. I just follow the simple things to get more followers on my twitter account, as I always try some interesting stuff to post on and leave a curiosity to the reader's mind to get back with me again. Another when any follows to me, it's a good way to always place thanks to him/her for doing that.

Always follow the followers of your followers and keep in mind that they should be active members with in a week.

I also highly recommend you put up a squeeze page and offer them something of value. Everyone wants a list that all you have to do is push a button, send an email and make $50,000! If you want to make money from those on a list you have to GIVE FIRST. Yes the money is in the list but unless and until you establish a relationship with that list you are just wasting your time. When you give your list value and then market to them you WILL make money.
