Sitemap.xml and sitemape page are both useful.

Sitemap page is useful for deep linking in your sites (just as alokseo wrote).

And sitemap.xml is useful for Search Engines to index faster, which pages they need to index.

Sitemaps are basically created to get all the public pages on the website in the search engine database. Sitemap carries all the links present on the website on a single page. So if the page bearing all the links of that site gets crawled by the search engine bot, then pages buried deep into the site also can eventually be visible by the bots and stand a chance of showing up in the SERPs.

Hi, XML Site map of your site is important in SEO for fast Indexing of your all pages by Google while HTML site maps are mainly used for visitors coming at your site so that they can easily find all their desired page to visit at one place.

    Hi,
We can submit the sitemap manually by webmaster tool. There is no need the path should be domain/sitemap.xml It can be any and we have to submit the sitemap in search engine. And xml sitemap is mostly accepted format by most of the search engine.

XML sitemap is helpful to search engines. It gives information of updated pages in site to the search engine crawlers.

HTML sitemap is helpful for visitors. It gives all pages information about the pages of the site which helps to understand the navigation of the site.

A Sitemap is a graphical representation of the architecture of a website. There are two kinds of site maps.
The first is used to assist visitors to a site to navigate the site and the second is done in XML. XML Sitemaps, usually called Sitemap with a capital “S”, are used by Goggle to gather information about the site.

Site map is very important to SEO. It helps visitors for site navigation as well as spiders / bot of search engine. To search engine it tells which page to crawl, which link to pass etc., The site map should be in the root / home page of the site. I wish to share an article Importance of site map which explains it very well. Believe it gives a perfect idea to every one about the importance of site map in SEO.

sitemap.xml informs the search engine bots about the list of pages that are ready for crawling in site. It also prioritize the pages so it makes the bots to crawl the important and frequently updating pages often.

User sitemap is mainly for usability, it is more useful for the complex websites.

If your site is new, or if you have a significant number of new (or recently updated pages), then using a sitemap can be vital to your success. Although you can still go without a sitemap, it is likely that soon sitemaps will become the standard way of submitting a site to search engines. Though it is certain that spiders will continue to index the Web and sitemaps will not make the standard crawling procedures obsolete, it is logical to say that the importance of sitemaps will continue to increase.

Sitemaps also help in classifying your site content, though search engines are by no means obliged to classify a page as belonging to a particular category or as matching a particular keyword only because you have told them so.

Having in mind that the sitemap programs of major search engines (and especially Google) are still in beta, using a sitemap might not generate huge advantages right away but as search engines improve their sitemap indexing algorithms, it is expected that more and more sites will be indexed fast via sitemaps.
