I have been writing for SEO for quite some time now. However, keyword research has always been somewhat a mystery to me. How exactly should you do it?

    Thanks!

Hi Kathleen. I'm using the Google Keyword Tool, it's pretty powerfull and free. You can find it in adwords -> Reporting and Tools -> Keyword Tool

With this you can search different keywords or prashes at once, get the monthly global and local searches and how competitive are these keywords. I'm pretty new at this keyword research so I'm sorry if I didn't provide a depth answer but I hope I was able to set you in the right track.

    Take care.

There is a keyword tool in Google ad word, where we can choose the best keywords for a website, depending on number of visits, competition and global search for a particular keyword, choose the keyword which is having less competition with more number of visits..Doing seo for a keyword which is having high competition takes a long time to get rank in major search engines..

What you want to do is to look at the global monthly searches, I generally target 50,000 or less the next thing will be to search for the competing pages in google by searching the keyword in quotes i.e "keyword" this will give you your competing for that keyword and I generally look at 25,000 or less. The final thing that I do is to search allintitle:keyword this will show you how many pages use this keyword in their titles and I will normally be looking for 10000 or less. Now this method is not an exact science but I found it works when seo for my articles.

Google keyword tool - If you wanna know what works, pick the most relevant keywords and see their search value. Always look into broad and exact matches (esp for 2 - 3+ keywords), the volume maybe lower for exact matches, but the VTR should be a lot higher.

no doubt Google Keyword Tool is the best source to get keywords.. normally we search in this tool to know searches and competition..
but to know about the competition we must search the keyword in search engine before targeting..

The keyword research process can be broken down into the following phases:

    Phase 0 - Demolishing Misconceptions
Phase 1 - Creating the list and checking it twice
Phase 2 - Befriending the keyword research tool
Phase 3 - Finalizing your list
Phase 4 - Plan your Attack
Phase 5 - Rinse, Wash Repeat

    Hello,

I'm quite new to this as well. I have been using the free version of Rank Checker which is a part of the SEO Power Suite pack.

I started by listing the obvious keywords for my site and then looking at the meta keywords in the Top 10 sites on Google for each of these. All of these were inputted into Rank Checker and the KEI generated, the higher the KEI the better the keywords. The tool was also used to automoatically generate an extensive list of keyword suggestions with KEI that I could analyse. I now have quie a list of keywords to start optimising all levels of my site.

There is a lot of free or demo software out there that makes SEO very easy and a lot of the demo restrictions can be worked around, although it does make the process a bit inefficient. It's great to try them all out before actually buying them.

    Good luck

I recommend Keyword Winner for Wordpress users to do keyword research and analysis. But with standalone websites, I recommend either Market Samurai or Keyword Elite.
