How to pick the right domain name for your web business

We've had a number of new customers approach us recently looking to set up a new web business. On of the regular questions we encounter is ‘what domain name should I choose?’.

Well, having chanted the same mantra on numerous occasions, we've decided to write a brief article to help people through the major points of domain name name selection.

Thought it might be good to post it here as well in case it's of use to anybody else: selecting a domain name

Hopefully it might help a few people out.

Some good info on a subject that many people will face. But it's getting increasingly difficult to find good, catchy, unique, simple domain names that would be free. What's worse is that often the reserved domains are just parked and not even used for any real site.

So usually when you find a good domain name, you will notice that sitename.com is already reserved but not really used, then you have to consider either thesitename.com or site-name.com or sitename.biz or mysitename.com or completelydifferentsitename.com or think about buying the reserved domain name... choices choices.

Personally I would not put too much effort in to it as I do not think that it is so important in hind sight. Domain names that are keyword rich are not that relevant nowadays and if you look at people like Sony and other nodescript names, they are doing perfecttly well on a name that actually does not make any sense.

That's fair enough, but Sony has one of he biggest advertising budgets in the world which they use to build brand awareness and drive web traffic. For Joe Public this isn't really an option, so having a target keyword in your domain name will give you a much needed boost in your web marketing efforts.

When choosing a domain name, SEO and keywords are Not the only things to consider. If you plan to start something serious, choosing a domain name is about as important as choosing a name for company or etc, surely you could succeed with almost any name or domain, but it's not something irrelevant. I bet many companies spend decent amount of time thinking about how to name their brand. Also there's a reason why sex.com was just sold for 13 million.

In my opinion, domain name is important for a site. It just like our names. It not only make you different with others, but also contains a specific meaning. The same is true for domain name.

its best to think of a name that is short and unique. never buy a old porn domain for traffic because alot of them names are still trademarked.

I think the best way to choose a domain is to use your keyword.com and if that is taken add some variables such as secrets, review, tips online and so forth.

    Single word on any extension.

If foxy.com is taken then go with foxy.co or create a domain hack like pix.ie

First, i use .com, and the names must have a strategic key word for seo in long time.

well...Domain name registration is one of the most basic requisites of setting up an online business. Your domain name is your actual identity on the web, through which users and search engines identify you.

First, do keyword research for the niche you want to writing or develop about.
Next, using some domain tool to check with that word and find the good domain name.
    Finally, register it.

Its upto the end user as to what domain to select. I can cook what they order, now if they puke, they shouldn't blame me for cooking it badly, eh?
Offer them suggestions but never imply that you want them to register a particular one, because i have handled clients who blamed me for things they didn't do correctly!

I only suggest clients to buy 2 domains. One for the company's name and one for the keyword their targeting. That's all you need. Obviously, you want to get .com domains and not other extensions.

Other extensions like .info or .ws wILL NOT rank as high as .com. This is true statement.

Simple and short dictionary words usually do the trick. I just purchased sellyourfilm.co.uk as the target market was UK and this was the simplest domain I could think of for the site subject.

I just explained this very thing to a customer of mine. He was wanting a catchy domain name for his business and I pushed him more to a name that defined his business. If companies have a huge marketing budget it makes sense to come up with a yahoo or google type name for brand recognizance. But for a small businesses this is not so.
