Few point need to be take care while using images on a webpage
Use Alt text for every image so that Search engine read the images and also user when browser do not load images.
You can give a title to images too.
You can also make image file name on on your related keywords.

    1. target important keywords in image alt text, title text, image file name and surrounding text (like caption).
    2. Provide descriptive image files name and caption as relevant to the page on which it is placed as possible.
    3. Place your images close the page text to increase its relevance for targeted keywords.
    4. Use limited number of images per page unless you are using lot of text.

Yes, images in the site will determine your site speed. So it is necessary to do a image optimization, as mentioned above
    1. Always try to reduce the image size.
    2. Provide alt tags.
    3. Provide title tags with appropriate keywords.

For fun I have tried to fully optimize my images once (keywords in file name, alt, title etc) and see if I can rank in Google image search. Well I got on the first page with most of the images. Don't think I got any traffic through them though.

But still on as this concerns the onsite SEO point of view it's important enough that every positive point you get from Google onpage helps you get results on offpage SEO.

Where have you heard this? Its not the most important, but image optimization should be included in your overall effort. But again, more important than that should be your backlinks.

Image optimization is very important indeed for Google. Try to add brief and image-based description (in image ALT TAG). You can use keywords but try not to use irrelevant keywords or anything not related to the image.

Load images from different servers. You can use a content delivery network(CDN) such as Google apps for storing and getting your images. even Amazon has such services. This is will lessen the load on your server and enable parallel downloads to reader's computer.
I made most of my images and css scripts(for the site techtavy . com) to Google apps yesterday it gives grear performance results. Entire site load in 2 sec which is pretty good.

Get the help of a professional for this.
