What is a web designer?

I would probably categorize my interest in web development but what is a web designer? It seems more and more that a web designer has to do what teams of people do for larger companies. Design the graphics. Design the layout. Articulate the company's or person's mission. Not to mention making shre you layout is broswer compatible and SEO. So why is it web designers are expected to do everything? What does a web designer do?

 

In my opinion, a webdesigner is the general name for most kind of web developers together.
If you are a webdesigner, you are:
Graphic Designer
Coder/scripter
Able to do SEO

Some people will think otherwise, but this seems like most webdesigners' job

 

i agree to silverblade; in my opinion a webdesigner can do all fundamental jobs to run his/her site

A web designer is some who can code in HTML and design graphics for use on the web. Web programmers write PHP, ASP.NET, etc, etc, and pretty much make everything work. A good web designer is hopefully truly a web programmer. Pure HTML web designers are becoming extinct.

 

Basically a web designer is one who design graphics.He is always in demand to be responsible to develope a website.

 

You see my view is that a web developer is someone who has the ability to design but also has the knowledge in order to integrate extra backend coding such as php and mysql.

I'd say a web designer is more specificially someone who works on the visual appearance and perhaps the SEO side of things. Thats just my opinion though, im sure others will disagree.

 

for me a web designer can create aesthetically pleasing stuffs for the site, can do SEO and can understand codes

 

There is a web designer: Specialized in designing the page (HTML/Photoshop/Imagery and Style).

Then there is a web programmer: Duty to create programable and functional classes/functions (PHP/ASP,etc.) to work with the above created site.

Sometimes a web programmer might have to do weaking of designer work and vise versa.

I myself am a good programmer but student designer.

..if you are a web designer,you must to do a lot of things.
this job is very funny but sometimes boring..

 

Web Designer : Some who can create a web page and/or web site.

Web Programmer: Someone who writes code to make the web work and communicate properly.

Web Developer: Someone who develops and manages web sites.

 

Web Designer is someone who designs websites and do not handle much programming or development.
No offence but web designers are basically rendered obsolete by technology like CMS etc.
IMHO, design is quite overrated nowadays 'cos
1) many netizens cannot differentiate between great design and average design (much like asking the layman to tell great art from bad art. Most layman will say a Picasso looks like shit)
2) Netizens are more savvy and go for the substance of the site i.e. the utility/tools and what the site has to offer, not fancy design. I would say design may be more important for B2C like shopping, gaming etc
Web programmers and web developers still have value though 'cos they are sought after to create or modify something new.

 

I see a web designer as being the person who designs the website's layout, writes the front-end code and advertises. The web developer is the person who writes the back-end code and interactivity.
