Just as a brief overview, search engine penalties negatively affect the ranking of your website on search engine results pages (SERPs). Penalties are imposed either algorithmically or manually and this can happen for a multitude of different reasons. Penalties can have different levels of severity, ranging from a simple drop in ranking position to a complete de-indexing of your website.

The effect of a penalty is a sudden significant drop in organic search traffic. In most cases, search traffic almost disappears overnight. Penalties can last a very long time - several months to even years.

The problem with search penalties is that major search engines, such as Google, impose them but do not reveal any information about their nature, the reason for their application. They offer no means to actually confirm that a penalty is in place.

This lack of transparency is unfair as major search engines such as Google are responsible for the majority of traffic for most websites. Their control of the "traffic tap" ought to be a little more transparent and secret penalties should be abolished. Website owners should have the right to know whether their site has been subjected to a penalty. We are campaigning for search engines to offer a means for website owners to confirm whether a penalty is in place. We are looking for case studies of websites which may have been penalized... Contact me in case your site may be affected.
