I have a blog site with a permalink set to "catagory + postname" & want to set it to just "postname". Can this be done in the "permalink" settings ie - /%postname%/ - or do I have to do a 301 Re-direct for every post & page I have on the site (& how do I do that)

    Thanks in advance
    Jason

Just put /%postname%/ (postname only in the url ).

You no need to redirect anywhere.

Thanks - I just need to be sure so I don't break anything :) So your saying just put /%postname%/ in the "custom structure" of the permalinks area & that will change all existing pages & posts?

    Thanks
    Jason

It won't break anything, and it will change the existing permalinks of the posts. Not pages.

Also, if you change to /%postname%/ you should also considered about the backlinks.

If this blog is new, then it's no problem, but if you have build backlinks, the traffics will drop temporary, because of the permalinks changes. I have experimented this with my blog, traffic was dropped for a few weeks :( and it was terrible, but when the changes is for good, long term. Then i would do the same.

If your blog has been indexed by the search engines you may want to try one of the permalink redirect plugins that is available for WordPress. I haven't used one in a while but when I did use one, it helped by SERP ranking on Google.

put /%postname% in the custom structure and then install 'permalink moved permanently' plugin.
