Announcing Digital Point Ads

The in-house advertising system I made a few months ago has become pretty popular and we get requests daily (literally) if we could make something like it for other people's sites.

So... now you can use it for your site to easily sell ad space directly to advertisers.

    http://advertising.digitalpoint.com/

The core functionality is the same... it supports the following:
    • 12 banner sizes
    • Eliminates risk of not selling ad space (can simply fall back to your AdSense ads)
    • Advertisers can target specific areas of your site (specific forums sections or blog categories for example)
    • Ads are geotargetable
    • Supports inline keyword based ads (optional)
    • Supports email based ads (optional)
    • Ads can come into your page with an animation if you wish
    • The full bidding system we use for our in-house ad system is supported
    • Advertisers pay site owners directly

If anyone has any questions, thoughts, etc. let me know.

Yeah, looks good. DP's own little advertising/affiliate program. Is there going to be a script people can download?

Well, just had the chance to read it through.. don't you think 30% is a bit much? So if I'm ever lucky enough to make $10,000, you take $ 3,000? or am I understanding wrong?

Nevertheless, I'll give it a one month trial on one of my sites.

For the advanced features (inline keyword based ads, etc.) there are plug-ins you can install to enable them (currently I've written them for vBulletin and WordPress). Beyond that, there's nothing they need to install, other than the normal ad JavaScript.

Well 5% of the 30% is paid out to whoever referred the site (opportunity to make money for referrers). As far as cost, it's not really expensive given the resources needed to run the system... It's doing realtime calculations on cost based on all the bids for every page view, and then also backend logging of every impression/click. As an example, the ad system backend resources to run it just for digitalpoint.com is a "cost" of ~5GB of data stored per month and 100M SQL queries per month (70% of which are writes). Our ad income has been FAR greater without adding any ads or moving any placements vs. AdSense (about 400% higher). Let's just call it 25% since publishers are going to be paid for anyone that finds the system through their normal usage of it... so a 25% cost to gain 400% over what their income was before... not too expensive if you ask me.

BTW... we have some pretty beefy hardware to run it for the time being, but we are already speccing out a monster system that would be a database cluster that has 4TB of memory (not disk space... RAM), to the tune of $450k, so...

I didn't noticed where they mentioned 30% but if they are planning to charge 30% as commission than think again sir . Now most user leaving buysellads because of same reason . BSA Charge 25% of whole month income and now most advertiser and published contacting each other directly . I know dp will make advertiser money secure but do think about this percentage issue , if you want to take it for long run and help dp users . Drop down your percentage little bit ...

    Thanks

Do you have to manually verify new site additions, Shawn? Or is the pink line at the top of the 'add site' line still true (I didnt think it would be, what with you announcing this and all)

If a site already has a bidding system for direct sales, they wouldn't have any interest in Digital Point Ads to begin with. :)

If a site is simply selling static ad space, they would be better to just use something like OpenX and keep *all* the money.

It's still invite-only, but gimme the domain you want to try it on, and I'll make it able to be added.

Hmmm excellent, nicely done Shawn, thanks.
I will have to look at this further, I know I can use it in a few places, but it might be great to integrate with some of my bigger projects which would require a closer look. Just configuring an adserver script myself, wish I saw this earlier or had more hours in the day.

Wow, this is awesome. Definitely plan on using it.
30% seems to be fair enough and on par with others. Google keep 32% of AdSense for content and 49% of AdSense for search. So yeah. Google also hold onto the money for what sometimes seems like ages (earning interest?)

The only problem I see with this method (not withholding their cut), is DP staff having to send out payment reminders etc.
I assume these payments can be made via PayPal?

    Cheers
    James

Yeah, payment can be made with PayPal. There will be payment reminders sent out 7 days before a user's "last month free" expires. Last month doesn't even start until they got a payment from an advertiser.

Also, there could actually be cases where *we* owe the publisher. If someone hears about Digital Point Ads from them directly (or indirectly because they clicked the "Your Ad Here" link), and they end up using it for their own site the referring site gets a cut of the new site's ad revenue.

Does it support multiple languages. I mean, do you have ads in Romanian?

It supports any language. It's a mechanism for you to sell ads directly to advertisers primarily. If you have advertisers that already want to buy ad space on you site with Romanian ads, it would be fine.

    Hi Shawn,

Can we use the ads along with adsense? Say one box of adsense at top and one box of digitalpoint ads below on the same page. If so, I will love to try this out.

Yes of course... you can use it on the same page and you can also use Digital Point Ads *in* your current AdSense spots. You can set the system to just continue displaying AdSense ads like normal if no one has bought any ads from you. That's what we do here... if there are Digital Point Ads available, it will use those... otherwise it will simply display AdSense as a filler.
