DMOZ is an open directory, edited by volunteers on their time frame. Do yourself and them a favor by reading the guidelines twice and making sure your submission is exactly as necessary.

Speaking as an editor of DMOZ for two years, I can tell you that anyone who doesn't fill out the information correctly may not even know they're declined.

The importance for SEO is more of a marketing standpoint; it's a great directory with high page rank pages.

Defiantly worth submitting every site there once, if it gets in great; if it doesn't move on.

Supposedly the key term here being once. I don't quite remember exactly but I read somewhere that if you repeatedly submit your site, it will likely not be accepted into DMOZ.

    1. The T&C forbid multiple suggestions.
    2. We treat spammers the same way that you treat spammers.

Interesting that an editor should mention that submissions are deleted if they're not submitted properly. I was always under the impression that an editor would move/edit a submission so that it meets the guidelines rather than delete it (if the site is listable). Two years of deleting what you consider incorrectly filled out information could be quite a number of sites; care to disclose a ballpark figure of how many you've deleted for this reason?

Getting your site listed in DMOZ is very difficult.

Actually in some areas and niches it´s considered almost impossible to get listed.

It can quickly become wasted time to try to be listed.

It takes a few minutes to suggest a site....then forget it. Not much time wasted IMHO.

    Maybe that was worded wrong....

What i wanted to express was, that it´s a waste of time to "keep" trying to be listed or wonder why your site is not listed.

Well if that means suggesting more than once, it can disadvantage a site being listed and can get one banned as a spammer.

No, they can delete it. They will tell you over & over & over that they will not and do not... but it's on the add page saying that they most certainly CAN, which by rights implies that at least SOME DO.

In fact, the add page says NOTHING about moving it!

Sites submitted to inappropriate or unrelated categories may be rejected or removed.

Well, most spammers, or at least spammers that are not also editors :D

Getting into DMOZ is a nightmare, try facebook and twitter, which will bring much more traffic. After all what good is a page rank if you don't have traffic ?

I think it all comes down the the quality of your site, so far i have 2 football news websites, one that i submitted to DMOZ and the other to Google News, both were accepted and are a little over 2 months old.

The key is meeting requirements while not compromising on the quality of your content.

That is all true, but every site, good, bad and ugly has to wait for an editor to volunteer to look at that category, chose to use the suggestions pool for a review to a possible listing. That can take from a few hours to a few years, quality sites sit and wait too.

My experience is there is easy to get the website into DMOZ at some categories, but hard at anothers... Have heard there aren't enough editors at the DMOZ, so some of categories are simply over queued of unapproved websites.

We always welcome new editors, the pay is awful nothing for every hour one works, the insults on places like this of being lazy and that is one of the better ones, great. If you fancy a cracking good hobby, with plenty of satisfaction and think you have what it takes to work in the DMOZ editing community, then there is a 'apply to become an editor' button on almost every page.

Lately it seems almost impossible to get listed in DMOZ. I vote that the open directory become a pay site and charge 1/3 of yahoo so more people can be included.
