I have a long list of keywords and would like to be able to check the rankings each week without doing it manually. Is there any free tool that lets you easily check the search engine rankings for multiple keywords at a time?

Why don't you try SEO book rank checker tool or rank tracker. In that way, you will not have to manually check hundreds of keywords.

keywords are not being ranked. only pages are being ranked, not keywords, certainly. they are however being measured according to volume/traffic. in such a case, use Google Adwords.

I agree with you and Google AdWords is the vest tool to find and pick for keywords that are frequently searched and I think they have it on a monthly search percentage.

I think you should go with "Google External Keywords Tool". This is free tool and have many options. Please adjust the options as how you need it and then understand the traffic for a specific keywords. You can type all your keywords in the box (press enter after each keyword). Then click search button. Also, you can get the help of Google Trends in order to understand whether your keyword is really a buying keyword for a specific month. Do let me know if my answers help :)
