Tell him it will be much easier, faster and cheaper to rank for longtail keywords. You can also mention that longtail keywords convert better because they're way more specific. If he still want to go after casino online or weight loss and you know you can't possible do it, just charge him a lot of money and he will probably change his mind :D

If he is really after high cometitive keyword then you should give me a very high quote cause it will not be easy for you to rank the site. Tell him that it will take years to rank.

    I totally agree.

Try to convince your client and tell him/her that long tail keywords would also contain competitive keywords he/she is trying to focus. If still, your client insists to go only for competitive keywords, give long turnaround time for seeing results and charge pretty much (in xxxx)---hehehe

    Good luck,

Well, I think it all depends his target market.
Is he a local business, trying to get the local consumers?
If so, you can rank for highly competitive keywords in Google Places with good local marketing.

If he is selling his services/products on a national or global level......
Then you can rank on the first page for shorter keywords with proper marketing but it is highly competitive
While ranking for longer tailed keywords, would be easier and more specific.
For example if your client is selling weight loss products:
Weight loss is a competitive keyword vs. loose weight without taking pills
The longer tail keyword is a buying customer vs. weight loss may just be a tire-kicker
The second, is a person that wants to loose weight right now, without taking any kind of pills and is looking for a solution.
Your client could be that solution.

I would be glad if the TS mention about the market of his employer in order for us to judge what is he really looking for. But indeed keywords nowadays are very hard to find and sometimes you need to go on a hard run to rank those.

Tell your client to search the market that how much it takes to rank the website on high competitive keywords.
