Hi All I'm very new to link building and after lurking here for a couple of days and have few questions about squidoo: 1) Squidoo lens is no good unless it's getting traffic, correct? 2) So, squidoo lens needs to be promoted, right? 3) Why would you invest time and money into promoting your squidoo lens as opposed to your own blog post? 4) Can somebody show me successful squidoo lenses for relatively competitive keywords? (squidoo lens ranking at least somewhere on first page of serps with a mil of competing pages if you search for that term on google)
This is a huge misgiving that you need to promote a lens, just wrtie a good lens with your keyboard as the title and only have 3 links in your body. Then write one article with the link in the bio pointing to the lens, use a high page rank directory and this should alert Google of your lens. Google sees lenses as authority sites, similar to hubpages. As for your other questions, you will have to do your own research, the above is from my experience only.
Squidoo will give you a DOFOLLOW backlink to your website from a page of relevant text (if you write relevant text!). This is part of why Squidoo lenses are good. Backlinks are good, relevant backlinks are better. Squidoo allows you to get one of these great links fairly easily. It does help if you promote your Squidoo lens to get more traffic to it and then to your site. Also, the more backlinks you build to your lens the higher it will probably rank in the SERPs. Sometimes though, the back link itself could be worth creating a lens. It depends on your niche. If your niche is not really competitive and your blog is brand new, it might make more sense to build a Squidoo lens. The weightiness of sites like Ezine Articles, Squidoo, and HubPages sometimes makes it easier to get these pages ranked for low hanging keywords. And, if your lens is really, really good you might be able to get it ranked more easily for higher volume keywords as well. If you want to see some fairly good Squidoo lenses try Googling "internet marketing squidoo lenses" there are probably hundreds of lenses on Squidoo about internet marketing but these ones are ranking the highest.
I would definately build a good quality lens for backlink purposes. Hit it with a few backlinks or an article and let it do it's work.
there was time when just building a lens on squidoo would get you ranked on top of google for any long tail terms, that shows the kind of authority squidoo has. with more and more web 2.0 sites started showing up and squidoo being abused by pharmacy and gambling site owners, both google and squidoo had to make some changes but it is still and authority web 2.0 site how you will use it depends on you. some use it for developing a page to get a good quality relevant contextual bnacklink and some use it for landing pages promoting CPA or clickbak product. if you are promoting CPA or clickbank or any other product and using squidoo as a landing page, then you will need to promote your lens. if you are just building a lens for backlinks, then there is no need to promote. jus do a few bookmarks to get the lens inexed so that your backlinks count, thats al

Build squidoo lens for traffic not just links, I have a lens that is on Google first page for good keyword and it is generating traffic and even make sales for me
I have a Squidoo lens on page 2 of Google results for a fairly common two-word phase. It generates most of the traffic (and sales) that I get for a particular Clickbank product. I have been very happy with it. However, I've not spent a lot of time promoting the lens itself. The most that I did was include a link to it in the author's resource box of a half-dozen Ezine Articles stories that I wrote and posted. You do have to spend some time creating a quality lens, though. You can't just throw up something and expect much by way of results.
