    yes, but only if:

    - the directory is well maintained and doesnt link out to any old crap
    - you are selective in your choices
    - i find niche and paid directories to be the strongest

    Yes!!

    - It helps in indexing the site.
    - it's another source of one way link.
    - Always revolve your title.
    - Submit in highly relevant category.
    - If directories are static, then it's really help full.

However, quality dir. submission is always good for site.

    Happy Submission :)

Directories usually take time to approve a link.

There could be a reason that site may be not submitted in appropriate category and/or not confirmed a activation link which is usually sent on email.

From my experience, Directory Submission definitely helps get some "free" links. As someone said, Backlink is a backlink - no matter what. Even no-follow links are quite effective from what I've seen in the sites I've dealt with. Only deal is, avoid using automated software : they can't get you listed in good directories. Do manual submissions, or hire someone who does manually.

Yes, focus on a small number of high quality ones. They should have their own backlinks, and the directory should be human moderated. Otherwise its just a pile of crappy spam that you should not touch!

Some do, and some not. Be picky when it comes to submitting to directories.

Let's put it this way... I'd rather get my site included over at top 10 paid directories than 100 free ones. Costly, but way more effective if you're serious about the business you run and on a budget.

Top100 free and niche related directories are always a plus, you'll "only" lose time, so if you have it, do it.

Now, if you ask me about generating quality (and in good quantity) backlinks, I'm thinking about "content syndication"... You should too...

If its the only thing you are doing; no.

If its part of a larger marketing/SEO strategy then yes.

As an example, would you think running one ad in one paper once would generate a return?

Frequency and Volume are keys in promoting anything. From submitting to multiple directories to advertising via PPC, etc. are necessary to make a collective impact.

Yes, it is very much helpful in getting some quality backlinks. It helps in indexing faster and may get a link juice.
