I agree when you say some categories are outdated (I can't imagine why your using wptheme as a similitude ) However there are plenty more categories that are always up to date. To make an assumption as a whole.. Isn't that a bit outstretched. IANS ~ Nevertheless, the main OP q - Is DMOZ still important? Yes but maybe (like you argued) not to the level as it was before. However as a contributing factor you cannot push aside its relevancy 100%. Small Disclaimer - English is not my native tongue, I edit the sections in my local small language sections.
I don't know that is the 'holy grail' of listings anymore in regards to how Google treats it, but I believe it has a PR of something like 8 and a traffic rank according to Alexa of under 500 so it is still a very important listing.
GOOD GRIEF NO ODP's main page maybe high PR (not that PR means anything anymore, but I'll humor you), but it has listings that have been on PR6 pages for a long time, that are still PR ZERO, so that should give you an indication of how much a link on a TOP LEVEL, high PR page dmoz link is worth. Answer: value negligible, not measurable. Most of the DMOZ pages have much lower PRs than 6, like 2, 3, 4... But again, PR is now an antiquated concept.
Answer is: no. You are way better off pursuing listings on other pages (it's easier and more relevant), have a BIG website, lots of FRESH content for Google's fresh-meter, relevant URLs, relevant image file names, etc.). Work on that, it's not easy, there is no magic pill, and a DMOZ link is the farthest thing from a magic pill as you can get.
Look at most of the links... they are complaints, so it's a false read for actual popularity. As for the Alexa ranking, come on... Alexa is the primary user of the ODP dump, do ya think they would let it slide too far? (and again, look to the linkage it gets, it's all webmasters and editors, most of which use tools that allow ranking via alexa).
Yes, DMOZ listings is very important , as you get listing also in Google Directory. Lots of webmaster site ping domains listing in dmoz, however i think that domain listed in dmoz more important when you sell it
When was the last time ya think a NON-Webmaster used either of those? So really, what you are saying, is outside of webmaster circles, there is not much to do about it at all? Many sites are NOT listed in the directory yet come up on top in the SERP, some that are listed do not... so really, google can not put much stock in their own directory clone (which funnily enough, thy count the ODP as the duplicate, not their carbon copy)
very important but very hard to submit --> forget it. I hate all editors, they are too lazy to read submission. I even do everything great (follow all requirements) but wait for 3 years nothing happen.......
Hey dude i believe the ODP is very important i have my reason and actually i am Editor there but you know ? i can not add my sites yet ! and problem is from the other mods doesn't review sites quickly or accept other submition. The dmoz.org directory still good and spiders always review it and links there very reachable. sorry for my English. With my Respect.
We aren't providing a service to website owners and I don't have much time for folks berating volunteer editors for not volunteering hard enough
Yes, we know you aren't providing a service to website owners. That is the problem. Webmasters and normal visitors alike don't give a crap if it's run by volunteers or paid staff. If this site is to be resurrected we need to be able to submit sites with some sort of accountability and a review in a reasonable time frame.
Agree with that. I submitted my first site years ago, it's still to be listed, reviewed or what ever. I've moved on and haven't bothered submitting any of my other sites. They ranking quite well without DMOZ. So for me listing in DMOZ is not important but that's just my opinion.
ROFL So you gonna tell me how to spend my spare time? Yes must go and review sites because web masters will get upset if their site is not reviewed in 24 hours. ROFL. Can I come and tell you when you must build up that collection you have got. Come on you have to do it. I know it's your hobby but you still have to do it, when how and as much as I tell you. Why on earth should people who want to collect sites, as a hobby, into an organised, collated and indexed way for use of anyone who wants to search using that sort of resource, give a crap about what web masters want?
Dmoz for sure plays a roles as its data is used by other directory like google aol directory, though it wouldnt get you much of traffic but if site is listed in dmoz google treats it in different way
