    Some of the biggest websites run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

    Similar but maybe better for home use: CentOS

    Probably Windows Server 2003 but that will be one expensive home server.

    Great asnwer. Except, there's no place to download 'linux' and make it a webserver. At least suggest a distro.

    BTW if you want Windows because you're unfamiliar with Linux - don;t be scared! You can download Ubuntu Server and install it into a working web server with just a few mouse clicks in under an hour.

    It's dead simple with distro's like Ubuntu. Full LAMP installation in under an hour. Just follow on screen instructions.

    I agree, take a look at this guide: "www.cjfay.com/lamp.html"
    There is also the How to Forge LAMP setup one: "www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_ubuntu_6.06"

    Got a question for everyone, does XAMPP really work, if yes, then that is the EASIEST option you have available. There's like literally a few commands only.
    XAMPP = "www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html"
