Several people find themselves lucky if they are earning good money with Adsense BUT see what Shawn (one of the top adsense money maker of 2005 and may be of today too) say about Google Adsense

    refrence

So, Never depend on AdSense only, Use other ad networks too to make money with your site/blog. Otherwise, you will also say the same lines as Shawn said.

Its never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket, diversification mitigates risk.

Indeed, never put all your eggs in one basket. But the downside is: AdSense pays way better than most alternatives (at least for me), that's why I'm kinda dependent on AdSense.

Enjoy the money while you are getting it and don't assume it is forever, I say.

If you have a successful website then go with the thing that earns you the most.
In most cases this is Adsense.

Selling Ad Spaces on your website directly can greatly improve your profit but only works for big sites and it is a lot of work.

But diversify just to diversify is not a smart move.
Using Adbrite for example next to Adsense does not really makes sense when you can earn more with Adsense.
Only replace Ads with better paying Ads. Don't replace Ads with lower paying once only to diversify.

People always have the fear to get booted from Adsense.
If you don't do anything stupid to jeopardize your Adsense account the chances are slim to get kicked out.
And if you should ever get kicked out, then watch for alternatives.

    My 2 Cents

IMO, adsense is only good for websites that can't generate revenue by other means. For example, blogging. No one is going to pay to read your blog unless you are popular or give real good advice. For most however, adsense is only way of generating revenue.

For me, I started out using adsense but never made any decent money from it. The key is getting lots of traffic and high paying keywords on your page. It takes lots of time to obtain both.

I've made significantly more money by building websites that sell a product. I am not talking about click bank or affiliate marketing. I am talking about products that I have designed and built. Thats where the real money is made. Instead of only getting 10% cut of the revenue generated I get around 97%. Most of that goes straight to the bottom line, unless I decide to spend some money on services.

There are so many different strategies to earn money, so many different approaches.
Everyone has to decide for themselves which approach they take.

I for example would not want a business where I have to spend countless hours in marketing, distribution and shipping of products.
Also acquiring Advertisers directly to a website is hard work and takes lot of time which I don't have.
I contracted an direct advertising marketer to handle the direct sales of Ads on my website for a cut.
But Adsense is the best monetizing way for my website so far. Even my direct advertising marketer (which is the biggest vertical for health in Germany)
can't compete with my Adsense CPM on my most expensive Ad Spot.

Why not? If the basket is the one that earns you most?
It would be stupid to diversify just for the sake of diversifying.
Only replace Ads with Ads that bring you more money, not less! ;)

You are WRONG. If one day your basket is crack, then you will be crying like a baby. Maybe you got to find a full time job.

What if that is the biggest earner for you, as i can say for sure that no other ad network, for that matter at least CPC bases ad network comes close to adsense when it comes to payments, diversificatiion is one point, but just for the fear of cracking up your egg basket do not mean you will throw away an opportunity, it is for you to understand and devise a method to survive, after all it is about survivial of the fittest.

If you have a quality website, you no need to scare. Although you get banned from adsense, you can find another PPC adversing program or sponsor easily.

Most of my sites are a combo of Clickbank and Adsense. Clickbank accounts for the bulk of my income. I was one of the first to be an Amazon associate as well (yep, I've been doing this a long time). Sadly, my state of North Carolina decided in its (non)wisdom to try to directly tax Amazon and similar companies based on the fact they have affiliates in North Carolina (which supposedly constitutes a "physical presence" in the state). Amazon responded by terminating its relationship with its North Carolina associates and disallowing anyone living here from joining their program. Major bummer! I was doing well enough with Amazon that I have considered moving to another state just to be able to continue with them. Politicians have no sense!

    @stephensmith

Thats real harsh. Its one thing to get your adsnense banned from something you weren't supposed to do or ignorance of the TOS, but to have your legitimate income legislated away from you, thats just wrong.
